Do sand bass still bite slabs?

Do sand bass still bite slabs? - 07/07/05 04:41 AM

I have not caught a sand bass using a slab in two months. During the fall and spring i was spoiled limiting out most every trip using my depth finder to locate schools of fish and droping my slab down. I am still locating fish in all of those same areas but i can not get them to hit a slab for nothing. Can someone give some help or at least let me know if whites have quit hitting slabs!!!

What lake are you fishing? Some lakes the slab bite dies off in the summer and you have to troll. A hell/pet works really well for this.

I have been out on Grapevine for the last several days and have had no luck with slabs at all.

Try the PET SPOON rig described in the first post in this forum.

Hard line,

I am still having great fishing with slabs at Ray roberts and Lewisville with the Burgess Slab and the Pearl colored little george, but as Boatman1 suggested you might try the HellBender and Pet Spoon Rig, Contact Bobby Burgess for the Burgess Slabs They WORK GREAT

Your slabs should still be working. You may just have to work the slab more.

There are numerous different ways to work the slab. Some of the techniques may work better at different tiimes of the year.

_Straight down drops and just letting it sit on the bottom. (Usually good for inactive fish)
_Straight down drops and barely lifting it off the bottom and simply holding it there. (Usually good for inactive fish on the bottom that want the bait off the bottom. - Think of dropping it in their mouth. smile )
_Straight down drops and quikly lifting it 2-3' off the bottom and then lowering the bait on a tight line controlling the fall. (This is good for fish that are on or near the bottom and are conducive to being active. wink )
_Striaght down drops and quickly lifting it 2-5' and letting it free fall down back to the bottom. (Make sure you know by line resistance where the bottom is. If you get slack line before it hits bottom - fish on. This is good for actively feeding fish that are in the lower part of the water column.)

_Cast out and let it fall to the bottom. Lift the rod and let it fall. Think of working a jig'n pig faster. (This is good for those fish that want the bait moving horizontally rather than just vertically.)
_Cast out and let it fall to the bottom. Just a slow reel enough to keep the slab off the bottom with a few pauses to make sure that you are "in contact" with the bottom. (This is good for those inactive fish that want the bait moving horizontally.)
_Cast out and let it fall to the bottom. Rip it off the bottom and either let it free fall back to the bottom or tight line it back down. (Good for actively feeding fish.)
_Cast out and use a count down method to get the bait to a depth where fish are suspended. Work the bait back as if you are horizontal jigging it. (Good for suspended fish in a tight area.)

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure there are more. But one of those techniques should get your slab bit at some point during the year. Sometimes you have to use more than one technique within a cast to get the fish to bite. Just have to experiment.

Good Luck and hope that helps a little bit.

The slab bite for me on Lewisville has really dropped off over the last month. I know it's still working for some, but not for me. Yesterday evening we were out and did well on the HellPet after slabbing two spots with only a few fish on each. Every lake is different but this seems to happen to me every year on LL.

Believe it or not, I have been experimenting with several lures to answer this question myself. In the last 45 days on Lake Lewisville, my Kastmaster 1/8 oz slab has outperformed my rattle traps and towwater popers 1.5 to 1. The most determining factor is the size. The smaller the better spoon success. 1Dad

Great post Jeff also it may be the color you need to have 4to7 different colors and sizes. If you can find them balled up then you fish should be able to jig them also. Tom

just caught 25 to 30 fish on Lake Graham today
about half on the 1 1/2 Oz Slab n Shad in both
white and chartruese color, the other half on
a small 1/8 oz white leadhead with small twister
tail grub rigged about 16 inches above slab.
This indicates to me that the Sandies here are
chasing smaller baits, however the schooling
action was with about 2 1/2 or 3 inch shad
being chased out of the water. Fishing noon to about 4PM.
