Texoma Sunday 3/19 my first SMB ever

Texoma Sunday 3/19 my first SMB ever - 03/20/23 11:57 AM

Been a weekend part timer on Texoma for many years and finally got my first ever small mouth. Wooohoo! Another check off my bucket list. LOL

I took advantage of the cold snap and fished solo Sunday from 1 to 730pm. I started just outside of HP waiting on a soldier to show up but he texted an hr later saying he can't make it so I ran to my deeper DS spot. My expectation was not high because the water temp showed 55f. Thirty minutes into the drift, not much showing on the graph and this is looking familiar march madness slowness on my logs. Then BAM fish decided to group up under the boat, the mother load, but at  every 15 mins wave-intervals. The first wave I caught 4 overs real quick... Then they stop biting even with the heavy loaded graph. Doh!

I decided to continue drifting and still seeing good graph every 15 minutes and caught 11 on the drift, with 4 good boxes the rest were overs up to 24". At 7pm the birds showed up in front of Blake Sheldon OK house and i landed another over and TWO SMB near the rocky shore. I heard SM fight "reel" good but i had two SM bit the ARig so they canceled each other out and not much of  resistance haha! My first ever SMB, a 16" and a 12" and still growing for the next lucky angler.

I tried lime green fluke that Windbreaker gave me, tried pink, and white ice also  and they all caught evenly. I did call a buddy over to drift closely along me, he had 5 anglers on his boat and they were using pink flukes and caught 15 to 20 good fish. He got the livescope and saw the crazy good amount of fish under us and but also saw also the March madness of fish not biting on his livescope as well haha!

Water temp Sunday was 55f, wind SE at 5 mph. Catching depth mostly 60ft with fish suspended up to 40ft. My ARig and solo fluke caught equal.

For the month on March. I did fished Saturday 3/11 with two buddies for three hours from 330 to 630pm and we only caught two 19 inchers and had a total of 4 bites. Did tried shallow but nada. That was a typical slow March day for me.

Good luck guys.

Nice Smallies Todd. Ifn you want some decent Small Mouth , a trip to Lake Murray just north of Big T is a suggestion.

Congrats on the smallie Todd.
In all the years I fished Texoma I have only caught one smallie. Big fight in a small package.

Texoma may be the best smallmouth water anywhere. I fished for smallmouth all my life growing up in the Ozarks, but the 10 best ones I've caught have come from Texoma.

Here's a nice one I caught at the Eisenhower ramp.

I am amazed you got two of those in on a umbrella rig.

Thanks for that info. I actually thought I caught 2 crappies cuz the 2 smallies were playing tug of war with the Arig and gave me very little fight. Lol

Weather forecast says North wind. But it was ESE wind instead and yes did stop by Buc-ees to pick up delicious Italian Hoagie and the smell must have reached Iowa Park. Lol

That's the 4th time this winter where the wind was 180 degrees different than the forecast. Stupid kpuder! Lol

Point Mouille, probably one of the best white bass (silver bass) days I’ve ever had. Fish were every cast or every other cast for hours and they were 16-18” fish.

DC will be in the big pond early June for 3 days, Chris. Smallie will be on the menu. I just checked and hooking 2 SM on one cat is a new world record coach

You two boys are the only two coaches in my circle of fishing buddies. Z loves throwing the ARig also. I just broke the world record, Z. Hope so break mine the next time you visit your pop.

Oh yeah windbreaker! Good days of the silver bass running up the river. We would mainly get annoyed by them because we were targeting walleyes with crawler harness or jig and minnow. When the silvers showed up, that put a hault to the walleye fishing. Launched from point mouille many times! I’ll be up there from end of June to beginning of July for two weeks. Plan to tear up the river and Erie with my pops on his new boat!

I will be up there the end of June as well! I love that fishery. I know exactly what you mean when you say they are a nuisance. As soon as the walleye guys leave, that’s when I would show up. Haha. The place becomes a ghost town and I have the place to myself! I mainly fish the new fishing pier by EP Marina all the way up through Trenton Channel and a little bit north of Wyandotte launch.

Where do you coach?

Re: Texoma Sunday 3/19 my first SMB ever - 03/24/23 04:24 PM

Trenton channel, north and west side of sugar island and fox island just north of sugar. The cut east of fox. By the pay bridge. Dumping grounds and lighthouse/buoys out from the banana dyke. Some of those are for smallies and some are walleye spots. When those silver run, I catch them everywhere!

Work has been very busy so i decided to take a break and took off work and fished 4pm to 745 yesterday (Friday) after the rain storm in the morning and after the windy cold front at noon. Water temp 56f. Lots of debris on the water from the rain. Had to look for clear water. Fish still following good in 60ft but only got 10 to bite. Four overs up to 23" the rest were good boxes.

I did thought about hitting the rocky shoreline for smallies but the water was too muddy from the runoffs near the coves.

Windbreaker, CoachZ is one of the hubbard regulars. We used to "coach" Z but now he can out catch out coach us at any lakes cheers
