Dead sticking at Walter E Long Jan 6 crazy - 01/07/23 09:34 PM

Dead sticking at Walter E Long was crazy Jan 6th....started off at 9AM with the thumper in 45 FOW with only large-mouth bass attacking Chartreuse slabs and white/chartreuse sassy shads. Not 1 white bass or hybrid, Nope....the lowrance was lit up, just not with what you would think, in 45 FOW. It was solid big fish from 45 FOW to 10 FOW with what I would say its going to be a great start to a normal dead stick morning. I guess the stronger predator was LM. 1st time dead sticking landed large-mouth only.....it was back to back to back LM, ended morning at noon with 22 LM, Hybrid and white bass ZERO.

At least you had some action. Last Friday, 12/30, my son and me went to lake Granbury for some deadsticking. We caught lots of sandies, 1 small striped, and 2 nice largemouth bass. 50 to 60’ of water, fish were stacked at 25 to 35’. [Linked Image]

The water temp on the Decker was 57 according to the lowrance....everything was deep, only time I saw any surface critters was around the boat when everything was joining the party!

I sure would enjoy pulling some green fish up while deadsticking for sandbass. They're tasty!!

Another crazy day on by 9 and off at 1. Water temp 58 and windy...everything was deep, Started bouncing slabs and It was another LM morning, first 10 in 38 FOW, Hybrids started getting into the mix around 1030. I moved out at times to 48 FOW, Double minnow crank bait was a blast, with 5 hybrids. 7in spoon was a shocker!....4 hybrids loved it flopping off the bottom. Anything you could jig with was producing, Lowrance showed fish under the boat, kept the fish under the boat all day, real heavy at times with constant back to back fish, allowed to open the tackle boxes and start throwing anything that would dive 5 feet and beyond....left them biting, as I trolled to the dock staying 48 FOW the fish stayed under the boat.....they loved the slab again today.

Last 3 days out on Walter E Long, Jigging is getting big fish to bite...seems to be what it is producing fish. Water temp 57, trolled around and found fish 38 FOW, very aggressive.

No Hybrids again, only largemouth everywhere I marked fish seemed to be what was biting....decent size fish for a Friday the 13th!

You catch those on slabs again? I’m on decker right now and only one small hybrid so far bouncing a chart slab off the bottom. Tried DS with flukes and sassy shad but no luck. I’ve caught them b4 out here DS with flukes so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong this time. Question for you are you spot locked or doing a controlled drift?

I tried the kitchen sink them days, jig heads with white flukes, pearl, pink, sassy shad, 3 inch, 4 inch...

slabs.....bounced off bottom spot locked and slow troll/drift until the fish are gone and stop biting....I do turn my slabs upside down

Re: Dead sticking at Walter E Long Jan 6 crazy - 01/15/23 07:10 PM

Nah we got DECKERED yesterday! 1 short hybrid and 1 bass each came on a slab. We tried DS'ing flukes, sassies and other paddle tail plastics as well. We even trolled up half the lake with umbrella rigs, hell pet and a heavy MAL with no takers. Had the thumper going too.

I have a customer in Tennessee who sent me a video of his livescope loaded with crappie while he was using his Bobo thumper. He said all he could catch was crappie. Another one in Arkansas uses his for blue cats. Many species will respond to thumping.

Looks like a perfect morning to be out there! The last 2 times we've been out there has been with bluebird skies.

Out on the water at 9am. Water temp 57, fish were scattered everywhere. The weather has them a little off.

Chatter bait working it from shallow to deep producing, CR also working well.

Started marking fish 38 FOW and decided to see if jigging slabs was still hot...Fresh drum decided to hit the slabs, first for me...

The slab continued to work well, until my 2 fluke teasers trailing behind the boat were cobbled up by 2 LM, what a tangled mess....after that seemed like swim baits started producing. A rig produced only LM. Not sure why the hybrids are being finicky....all in all. A good outing except for all the PANICKED fishermen going 60 MPH to where?....they'd go by 60, stop fish a few minutes and back to the throttle. Wouldn't care accept the A holes go by close even with 80% open water.....just saying, if catching fish is the goal, they obviously fail most of the time, otherwise they wouldn't be so PANICKED to get to the next spot.

BB fishermen , they own the lake just ask !
A suggestion with regard to the Hybrids, bloody chicken livers can put a lot of blood in the water column. Put a chunk on a jig head .

Thanks gborg, I'm gonna try the bloody chicken liver add it as trailers!..

That 'ol chicken liver does work out there! The times I've tried it I put it on a regular bait hook and wrap sewing thread around it to keep it on the hook.

Awesome report catch thanks for sharing you should do good down there with a weighted Hellbender/Petspoon rig, and/or 30' Jet-Divers with Petspoon or 2-3" curly-tail grub, for Whites+Hybrids thumb fish

Crazy!..fish or me, water temp about the same past few days. Started calm 9am decided to drink my coffee and look at graph, but then the wind kicked up and changed everything. started across from ramps to stay out of wind in 45 FOW still close enough to reach grass edges......game on! left them biting1230..crank bait and slab. Never changed since they kept biting.

Re: Dead sticking at Walter E Long Jan - 01/20/23 09:35 PM

Water temp 58, started nice enough.....with the most fish I ever lost due to SURFACE dancing in 15 to 25 FOW they'd hit start running towards the boat and the dancing would begin. Wind, cold, waves and sprinkles had me heading for the barn early....got maybe 2 hours in and Left the Hybrids biting swim baits in 40 FOW.
