Possum Kingdom sand bass - 10/27/19 03:37 AM

Sand bass fishing is great at PK right now! We have mostly been using slabs and flies to catch our fish off of main lake structure. I have openings if anyone would like to go on a sand bass trip. You can reach me at 817-243-5858.

Nice catch. What about the Stripers? Are you having much luck with them?

Thanks banker! TCK73, we caught about 10 stripers on slabs yesterday mixed in with the sand bass. All but one were shorts. I've heard some reports of some being caught but it just hasn't been consistent so I haven't been targeting them much. They seem to not be schooling up like they were last year and last spring, but hopefully this cooler weather will help.

Getting better, dodging the bass boats via their tourney was tough.

Good to know you can find some sand bass. The green lights I fished in years past had very few sand bass this year. Two year ago I took one of my friends from church out fishing and he caught over 100 in about two hours. Back then you could not pull a crappie jig across the lighted water without catching a sandbass.

I talked with a game warden down at the dam yesterday and he told me that he has been hearing what I have been saying that a lot of the stripers went out the flood gates this year. If the sandies stayed in the lake they should thrive over the next few years. Should be about four years until the fingerlings they stock this coming spring are big enough to eat the sandbass and gizzard shad.

PK, your thread infers a Striper stocking spring 2020 !? Your intel comes from the warden ?

No, just seems they do it yearly. I was just amazed that the Game Warden was paroting what has been said on this site about the striped bass being lost down the river. If they don't stock and we don't get a huge rain when the stripers are full of eggs, the lake will for the most part return to being a natural lake. Good for the LM Bass folks and bad for those of us who like catching stripers.

All that said, I wish the TPWD would consider a put and take fish like Walleye as well as the stripers. BRA is in their own world. They did away with the generator at the dam that would have created lots and lots of "green" energy this year and could be used to pull the lake down prior to spring and capture most of that water and prevent the loss of those fish when the flood gates open. People died below that dam this year when those flood gates were open. More proof when it comes to government, the left hand does not now what the right hand is doing. TPWD and BRA do not work together.

Enough water went thru that lake to completely empty it and fill it a few times within a short period of time, the generators would not have helped with that amount of water. As much as I hate the loss of life by the guys in the boat, they made the decision to do what they did, not the water. Hopefully the lake will be stocked more, and return to a good striper fishery. I for one will not complain about the rain, it is a needed resource, and I think the BRA does a fine job managing it.

Good enough. If it continues to rain and the gates go open PK will become a great LM Bass lake, as those ocean fish will go out every time those gates open.
