Grapevine "The Flats"

Grapevine "The Flats" - 08/07/19 05:16 AM

Is anyone familiar with an area referred to as the "flats"? I think it's supposed to be on the north side just west of the twin coves marina.

I haven't fished grapevine in a long, long time. But I don't recall anywhere being noted as "flats".
West of Twin Coves on the north side would be the rock crusher (if that's still a thing there) and there are numerous humps that hold fish.

howevah...if you go far enough West, it does get really flat.

Many Years ago had an Oldtimer call the cove in front of the old Catfish Hut the "flats". He was there when they built the lake and had different names for all the lake features. He called the rock crusher the Shaker because that's where they sorted sizes of rock, called Silver Lake 3 Tanks. He showed me an old tank dam that held Catfish in the middle of the Summer and still does to this day.

Not heard of that myself either. There are some scattered humps about a 1/2 mile west of twin coves (Rock Crusher) about 200 yds from the north shore that are usually a good sandbass spot(s). I will be checking them today matter of fact.

Thanks! Caught a few a bit bigger after we split! Lots of fun catching the smaller ones, can't wait till they grow a bit!

I don't know how many we caught. It was a fire drill once we got over to the rock crusher. We only kept 20. We went for a boat ride after that. [Linked Image]

This was why I was calling you over to get close.

Then I had some idiot ram my boat twice as I'm putting my boat on the trailer. Fun times with the boat ramp fools. I finally had to tell him to back off and quit trying to load his boat till I got off the ramp. I could not believe there was not one scratch on the boat.

I have never heard of the flats myself either. Nice screen shot. There is no shortage of sandies for sure with the amount of bait there is and several good spawns.

Yes the lake had 3 months of no pressure since it was flooded so long. Then I couldn't buy a fish last year after September on, due to the gates being wide open for so long.

Plenty of bait for sure. The only thing I'm not seeing is the 13" plus fish.

That helps too! I have caught a few myself but they are mostly smaller than that. I think there is just a strong 2 year class this year. Hopefully these will grow up next year. Pretty crazy to think of the amount of sandies that are taken out every year from the mainlake in the summertime to the creek in the spring and it still puts them out.

How do I get to the rock crushers from meadowmere launch?

From Meadowmere go to main lake and turn left go about a mile and there are numerous humps scattered on the north side of the river channel. Or about 2 to 3 small coves from the twin coves area on the north bank. Look for 3 or 4 , 10,000 square foot shacks on the bluffs on the flowermound side.
