STILLHOUSE RIVER - 03/09/19 04:54 PM

Heard the whites are thick at the gravel crossing in the river, anyone confirm this?

Probably take my son out there tomorrow. I'll follow up with a report. But every time I'm out there, I get skunked, but.... "They were biting on every cast yesterday."

My daughter and I put in at Cedar Gap and went upstream on Sunday. There were many boats out and everyone we saw and asked had between 0 to 4 whites. On the way upstream we got skunked. On the way back we caught 3 whites and a couple Black Bass. I'm not sure what is going on with the White Bass Run right now. Too early? Too late? IDK

My son went with his friend today and got skunked bank fishing. A kayaker had 10 on his line from up river. I’m going Monday around 4 and hope to get some numbers. Anyone heard about the steps or log jam? The trend on here and other sites is the run is very sporadic at the moment.

Good luck thumb

It sure hurt my feelings seeing all the yaks and boats out yesterday as I crossed the long bridge. Maybe this weekend...

I went up past gravel crossing and caught about a dozen. I didnt get launched at cedar gap until after 10:00. I saw many people who got into the morning bite that limited out. River was FULL of boats and Yacs. I noticed many boaters that have Zero boat etiquette. I know you are in a hurry to get to your favorite honey hole, but dont blow by the other boaters at high speed. I'm on a flat bottom, but those poor Kyakers. You are responsible for your wake.

My daughter took her kayak to gravel crossing and worked her way up. She started trolling right at gravel crossing and started catching small males. She caught 30+ White Bass but they were all 8 to 9 inches. She caught 4 Keepers. She told me the water was thick with these small males, she could see them in the water everywhere. I'm going Sunday in my boat with her and am going to make a day of it. Hopefully a bunch of big fat females are right behind all these tiny males. fish

We put in again at Cedar Gap before daylight. Made it up to Gravel Crossing right before sunrise. We started trolling and working our way up river. We went up stream until we had to beach, then walked and waded further up. Then we trolled home. We caught 20+ fish. You could see the whites in the water. They were everywhere. Everyone was catching fish, just not like we should be with that many fish in the water. Nobody was limiting out. We fished for about 6 hours. Trolling, pitching and fishing from the bank and wading.
We caught 15 good keepers, nice big fish. 50/50 mix of males and females. Females were FULL of eggs. I will be heading back up this coming weekend. Got to take advantage of the run. In wont last forever.

Re: STILLHOUSE RIVER - 03/26/19 02:53 PM

Oh alright thank you! Do people fish right at the mouth of the river or further downstream? I was looking on google maps and there’s a place on Fm 2484 that looks good but idk.

Look for Gravel Crossing further down 2484, right on the bend. Fish from there up for white bass right now.

Re: STILLHOUSE RIVER - 04/05/19 03:30 PM

My daughter just text me at work. She just caught 5 whites in 10 minutes from her kayak, just up from Gravel Crossing. They were way up stream from this spot last weekend. Could they be on their way back to the lake now? I'll find out if they still have eggs this afternoon. If they are empty, that will be the case. I hope the rain holds off this weekend. Id like to put my boat in Saturday and Sunday and chase them around a bit before the spawn has completely run its course.

Sure sounds that way, unless they are late. Be interested in hearing if they had eggs or not

heres a tip. alot of fish spawn on the main lake. there is a large flat opposite dana peak park. there is a huge pile of old garbage can the corps put in abt 6 to 10 feet of water many years ago. I used to go get the cheap wide wobble crankbaits in the bargain box at wallmart and troll back in forth over that huge flat. I would catch big white bass and occassional monster black bass just trolling back and forth. it is a very large, gradually slping flat that terminates into a big dropoff into the main river channel/ not many snags at all on that big flat. just keep going back and forth until you find the speed and the depth.
another good spot can be the big sand flat near the bridge, before you go into the river channel. you will catch better fish in the main lake. same thing, troll crankbaits back and forth.. also a MEPPS AGLIA NUMBER 2 with silver french blade is killer!!! the french blade has a very distinct wobble that triggers fish to bite.

After the rains came through Saturday and Sunday my job site was too wet and muddy to work....Off to the river I went. I started trolling at Gravel Crossing. I trolled for about an hour with nothing. I thought to myself, thats it, the run is over. Then i got to an area that gets real shallow except for a little trench on on side. They did start hitting. I caught about 12 and kept 6. I caught the biggest White i have ever caught. 17 1/4 inches, 2 pounds. Caught her on my ultralight rig. really fun. Best Monday in a long time. They are still there, You just have to hunt them down.

Thank for the tips. I will take a look at Dana Peak this weekend weather permitting. I did some trolling out past the bridge heading up towards Trimmier Creek. Birds were working the area. My 2 buddies on kayaks and I in my little flat bottom caught a bunch of small males trolling back and forth at the mouth of Trimmier Creek and the lake.
Im learning how to fish these lakes. This is my first year with a boat and its a lot of fun. Ive been fishing from a kayak for a couple years after a long hiatus from fishing. Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
