Pk 6/29

Pk 6/29 - 06/30/18 12:39 PM

I had one of my old clients wanting to take some of his clients from Ft. Worth out to catch some Pk striper yesterday. When they called to set the trip up we discussed what methods would be best and whether to try Pk or Texoma. Since they wanted to fish a week day I said Pk. I don’t usually troll when I have clients unless it is 2 or less people but they agreed to help net fish untangle umbrella rigs and reset them. That allowed me to watch for trees on sonar and drive the boat while keeping the guys busy. After about an hour with only 3 smaller fish caught I decided I needed to drop those expensive rigs deeper right above the tree tops to get those big fish I kept seeing on the sonar. Within seconds both rods doubled over with multiple fish on. We landed 4 on 1 rod and 3 on the other rod between 3 lbs up to 7 lbs. One client said I’m done once he was able to get them to the boat. He took a break but couldn’t stand watching everyone catching so many fish so shortly he was back at it again. The guys landed 38 fish up to 11 lbs but only kept their limits. They had their limit by 8:45 but wanted to c&r a few. The guys all agreed they wanted to do it again soon. I’ll post some pics from my desktop later.

Wow! I've hooked multiple fish before when I used to troll but never got more than one in. If the line did not break they bent the hooks or straightened out the swivel. Once at Texoma, the even broke the swivel.

Bet those guys had a great time. I quit trolling at PK. I could go through tons of gear trolling that lake. I guess if you have an electric down rigger you might be able to control depth well enough to stay out of the trees.

It’s a trial and error thing. You have to be willing to loose some gear occasionally while adjusting the weight and amount of line out even with downriggers. I don’t have downriggers so I will only loose the umbrella rigs and not any downrigger terminal tackle. I will try to post a pic of one capt Mack umbrella rig that had its maiden voyage yesterday. It is mangled and broken now. Ordering more today. hammer
When clients are paying for a good trip sometime we can justify loosing some tackle. Lol
They have already messaged me today they had a great time and want to go again.

Good work Bobo. I think I will head down there in the morning and see if I can find a few. Two weeks between fishing trips Is too long!

Pretty good day today, quality over quantity, and they were full of fight. I had one that wrapped around a tree and broke off, he fought hard and felt big, but they all did lol. thumb

Bait, 7"-8" Gizzards. We couldn't get any action on top water at daylight. Caught a few LMB's and whiskerfish as well. The water is warming up, it is about what it was this time last year according to my notes. I saw a thermocline in a few places setting up. I bet it will be tough fishing in the near future. Give me another 30 days and I will be begging for a blue norther and some dead stick action! Summer is definitely here.

The best tip I could give about PK right now is fish with your eyes and not your electronics. Top waters early. Drive around until you find fish busting the water.

White cranes seem to know which fish are biting.
Finding fish is not an issue. Finding biting fish is a different story.

It took me a while to figure out how to change the jpeg format to png but I think I did it. I hope this works for those of you who have been patiently waiting, LOL
I'll try to get a pic of that mangled rig tomorrow and maybe get it posted here.

Best layout of fish that have been cleaned up ,washed the blood etc off . Excellent catch. Good looking healthy fish.

Thanks but I didn’t wash them. Lol. I don’t remember but 1 fish that bled because one of the other jigs must have hooked into the gills from the outside while it was fighting to get off the hook while being reeled in. Seldom do they take the jigs beyond their mouth with these umbrella rigs. My fish boxes in the floor of my boat hold water when the ice melts and sometimes lake water comes in from the overflow drains. They were cold when we laid them out for pics. That day was the first time I had both boxes so full the lids would barely close.

Re: Pk 6/29 - 07/03/18 03:59 PM

Randy: That's kind of what I saw last week. Topwater action happening randomly down lake. Finding fish laying in 35-50 feet that would not bite is common. I think they are stripers but they could be something else. I still got plenty to take a shad, but the fishing was somewhat slow.

All that said, I am not ready to spring for electric downriggers and $40 Captain mack rigs to dangle over petrified cedar trees yet. I can understand why guides do it, as people pay to catch fish and not for a boat ride. I'll just put up with the slow easy fishing of live bait.

PK I also can’t bring myself to the dark side! I have electric down tiggers I have never installed.

Re: Pk 6/29 - 07/03/18 11:03 PM

I prefer not to troll when I have 4 or more clients unless that is what they want. I think it can be boring at times. I like for everyone to have a rod in their hands. But I don’t want them bored or hooking each other trying to catch fish. As long as they are willing and able to help land fish untangle the rigs and reset with some supervision I’m good with putting a lot of nice fish in the boat! Sure beats throwing that darn net and trying to keep enough shad alive in this heat.

They’re wanting a constantly moving bait. Keep it natural colored. 3-4 limits by 7am every time in last 10 days. 3-13lbs. I’ll be there tomorrow morning also.
