Where to bank fish in Bexar County? - 11/18/21 01:42 AM

Hi all,

This is my first post here.

I've been looking for a good place to take the boys bank fishing around Bexar. Been reading about all the ark ponds/lakes but having trouble making a decision.

Any suggestions appreciated!

welcome to the TFF! Glad to have you on board. Looking forward to more of your post and seeing some of your catches. cheers

Side Note: There are a lot of places in Bexar County that are bank fishing friendly. Cibolo Creek, Live Oak Lake, Converse Lake, Salado Creek, Leon Creek, and the San Antonio River. You also have Calaveras Lake, and Braunig Lake. You can Google and find the exact locations of these spots. thumb

Have you checked out the Bank Fishing Map - Texas?

Additional information about the map can be found in the Bank Fishing Forum.

If you find some spots not on the map please report them for other TFF members.

Good luck!

Thanks! I've been looking at the bank fishing map and might like to try Converse lake.. I've fished Calaveras and Braunig back years ago but never much luck for sunfish. When my son was ten he caught a 33lb cat at Calaveras but that was on a boat! I'm also interested in Cibolo Creek but not sure where we can fish there that's public access.

Bream, as we call them where I grew up have always been my favorites.

Crescent Bend Nature Park is a very good place on the Cibolo Creek to catch sunfish and Rios. hooked

Not sure which Converse lake you mean but don't bother going to the Converse City Lake Park on School street. Targeting sunfish there is a losing proposition. There is literally 1 green sunfish in the entire lake. No other sunfish. It's just too big to be food, otherwise the count would be zero.

Made a trip to Castroville Regional Park on the Medina River today to scout it out. I didn't have any live bait with me but managed to catch one bluegill on a Berkley Crappie Nibble. Looks to have potential but with the cold front and wind just too hard for me to tell.

Took an afternoon trip to Crescent Bend yesterday. Only fished one small area with the Berkley Crappie Nibbles and caught small bass .. Also caught a couple of decent Redbreast (I think) on a small beetle spin and a panfish assassin jig. Tried a plastic crawfish and missed another bass... he jumped and threw it out.

Planning to take my boys there this afternoon but this time I'll have worms.

Had a great time! Thanks for suggesting it!

Spring, early summer, and fall are the best times to fish Crescent Bend. Glad you were able to catch some fish. Hope you and your boys get a few today. thumb

Thanks. We're ready with the red worms and night crawlers

BTW, is that bridge at Schaefer road park property or public access?

Public access. There is parking just above the bridge off of Schaefer. thumb

So since I posted this, I have been to:

Castroville Regional Park (Medina River)
Crescent Bend Nature Park (Cibolo Creek)
South Lion'sPark (Pond)
MIller's Pond Park

So far, the only place I have had a decent catch is Crescent Bend (Bass and Redbreast) using a slip bobber and worms.

Tomorrow I'm planning a trip to Converse North Park and may hit Live Oak as well.

Still no bites on trout...those big annoying birds are sure getting them though! And strangely enough, I have had no luck with the channel cats.

You will do much better once spring arrives. Early summer, late summer, and fall are good times to fish. thumb

Side Note: I would not waste my time at South Lions Park or Miller's Pond. Just my two cents. 2cents

Agreed. I was not impressed with either and I don't just mean the fish.

South Lions Park is really nasty. Last year I went a couple times after work and no one caught anything but I saw 2 or 3 dead fish including a catfish. Water that kills catfish is scary.

Miller's Pond isn't nasty and they are stocking trout soon, but I've never had luck fishing there. They both have lots of bank access. Another spot it Guadalupe river state park, though I never catch trout there, and the easy to reach sections are usually fished out. There are some nice parks in Kerrville that look like they have shore access but I haven't tried them yet.

Converse North Park is pretty slow these days. I was there the other day but not even a bite. It's always pretty windy and good bank fishing territory is limited. There is a channel behind the lake where you'll have better luck. Live Oak was a one and done for me. I don't consider it worth the time.

Went there last week and I agree. It would be nice if they could clear some of the bank out a bit more.

I'm planning to go back to Castroville Regional Park this week and probably Boerne City Lake as well.

I'm kinda splitting my efforts between the bream and channel catfish.

My rules for Boerne are:

1. Kayak fishing only
2. Get there prior to 8am so you don't have to pay

Boerne is nice. Has some deep water and you can walk around a good portion of the lake. Best fishing spots are only available from the water though. Lots of private property. The little creek like indent directly opposite the boat ramp is productive.

Thanks for the tips.. I owe you one and since I went today here it is. Out of camping/swimming season months...we don't have to pay. The booth at the entrance was locked so I talked to the park guy and that's what he said. We had the whole place to ourselves.

Next time I might try those two points coming off that cove that divides the two parking areas.
