LBL Austin ! 7-2-20 - 07/04/20 06:17 PM

Fished Lady Bird Lake this week with my good friend Jeff. Got a late start. We fished from 10am till about 2pm and caught about 30 nice Bluegill and Redear, along with four nice bass in the 2 to 3 pound range. Most of the fish were caught between 10am and 12noon. After 12noon the bite slowed down to almost a complete shut down. Spoke with several other anglers on the water who were having a good day fishing for bass. Bluegill were all in the 9" range. Most of the Redear were in the 9" range with two in the 10" range. All fish were caught on the west side and were in water 10 to 12 feet deep. Fish were all by grass beds. All of the sunfish were caught using the "Bait of Vogey" aka Gulp Alive Minnows. The Emerald Shiner got the best results. Drop shot method was also used. The bass were all caught using small crank baits with colors of choice being Chartreuse/Black. A slow/medium retrieve worked the best. A couple of the anglers we had spoken with stated that the bite is very good between sunup and around 9am. All fish were released to fight again. A great day fishing the LBL. woot

OK...I couldn't remember how I found out about the GAM minnows, so did some research on TFF. I first read about the Gulp Alive Products on a LAKER ONE post on 7/23/19. Laker stated that he had been experimenting around with the Gulp products & Rionator commented about success with them on this same thread as well. I tried them for the 1st time on 8/7/19 & the rest is history. Thanks Curtis for the tip & you really deserve the title "innovator of fishermen" !

Curtis...The only reason I have the success I do is is because of people like you, period ! The information I have learned on this forum is invaluable. Especially Crickethook (Jim), who gave advice on fishing the rip rap & doctorxring (Chris) who has taught me about trolling motors & side imaging. If I do catch more bigger fish than you is only because I fish waters that have bigger concentrations of larger fish. Thanks again...

I totally agree with you Vogey. I have have never fished for sunfish in my whole life before meeting BAF Chuck . After meeting Chuck and joining the TFF , like you I have gained a ton of knowledge on the sunfish and I am still learning more about them. Love making them one of my top two target fish. My number one target fish is the crappie. By the way both the Gulp Alive Minnows and the Gulp Sliders work GREAT on the crappie as well. I love this section of the TFF and the anglers who post here. Let's keep having a FUN year. woot

Curtis glad you enjoyed and sounds like you had a successful day. The east end of the lake by the Oracle building has some good sized bass and good sunfish numbers. I fish the other end more often, west of Mopac the bass are smaller but the bluegill/sunfish seem bigger. I wish I could fish it more on weekdays and avoid the rental kayak/paddle board crowds, but even on weekends from sunrise until around 9 it's pretty quiet. LBL is probably the best kept kayak fishing secret in Central Texas.

Thanks for information. You are right. Weekday fishing is the best. Prior to the virus outbreak the areas I fish were not at all crowded. Now it seems like everyday is a weekend day. Still less people during the weekdays than the weekends. juggle
