Slabbin' on Athens - 07/02/20 11:03 PM
Today was the last chance for me to hit Athens. Wife has some major projects she wants done before I head back to Amarillo of Sunday. So I broke out the tube, loaded up on worms and went to the lake for a few hours. Folks I am telling you that Athens is on FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have some time get up here and hit it. I only fished 2 spots today and was into fish from the get go. My actual intention was to do a complete catch and release day but this one came to hand bleeding from the gills.
One fish won't make a meal so I decided to keep 8 fish in total. I got quite a few smaller fish today running about 6 inches or so but I hit a lot of really solid fish as well.
As usual on Athens I got into some bass as well. I got 3 that were all like the one below and I also stuck a really good bass. I don't fish for bass and am not real good at estimating weight on them but I'm pretty sure the fish was at least 7 lbs. I had him on for quite awhile and finally lost him on the 3rd jump. I got a couple really good looks at him and he was a good solid fish. The problem with fishing worms on small jigheads is that the hook is also small and you just can't get a deep enough hookset on a fish like that so the toss the hook when they get to jumping. He was fun while it lasted.
These are the ones I took home. The first fish that was bleeding was the smallest of the bunch.
I pulled the 3 fish on the top to give an idea of what I have been getting into. The cutting board is 12 inches wide.
Man I am going to miss this lake when I go back to Amarillo. Sure wish one of the schools down here had NJROTC. Hopefully I can get back for a weekend in July before school kicks back in Aug. Folks I won't be able to catch these things so I sure hope one of you can get into them. Athens is really hot right now.
Cheers Y'all.
