Lady Bird Lake 6-9-19

Lady Bird Lake 6-9-19 - 06/10/19 03:21 PM

Had another great day on Sunday. The Tom Miller Dam was releasing water so there was a pretty strong current. Even with the waterflow the water was lightly stained, but could easily see the bottom in 4-8' deep water. Fished from about 6 am to just after noon.

Put in at the Ramp at Stephen F. Austin HS. Decided to head north and see how the fishing was North of MOPAC. I wasn't disappointed. I was casting to the spots where branches were overhanging or in the water. Caught a small hybrid sunfish on my first cast with a small, shallow running crankbait. In the first hour I caught two big sunfish ( .99 lbs and 1.05 lbs by my scale), and a bunch of smaller sunfish and bluegills. Fished the pylons of the bridge with a Texas rigged Senko, didn't catch squat. Fished the south bank down to Auditorium Shores, caught a lot of sunfish and bluegill, and my best largemouth of the year, a 4.29 lb fish, casting to a log where I had caught several small sunfish. Came back up the north side and the sunfish were so aggressive it was almost like fly fishing, several times my crankbait got hit before I even started the retrieve. Would also get hits when the lure crossed from the shadow into sunlight.

I caught at least 25 bluegill and sunfish and probably lost ten more within fifteen feet of the kayak. The only bass bite of the day was the 4 pounder in the morning.

Though there isn't any powerboat traffic on Lady Bird, it isn't without aggravation. When the rental places open the there will be crowds of folks in kayaks and on paddle boards that may or may not know how to steer, so be ready to dodge them. Some will actually pass between you and the shore or cross over your line. There was one major hazard to navigation. A rare bare breasted sunbather on a paddle board created a near solid island of kayakers and paddle boarders trying to follow her down stream, completely oblivious to their surroundings.

Another great day fishing in downtown Austin. Will probably hit this Lake at least once a month through the summer and up my lure size to target some bass.
