Showing Off Their Colors!

Sunfish are really starting to show their pre spawn colors. Here a few creek fish that I caught this past week. Fish caught on ultralight tackle using worms with a bottom technique.(Slow/Medium Retrieve,bouncing bait off bottom). Fish are in shallow water holding close to brush piles! All were released to fight again! Catching some nice pre spawning creek sunnies. It just don't get any better!

This is why I target Sunfish. Chasing fish with colors that I have never seen before. Each drainage has their own unique features. Winter in my rearview mirror and Sunnies holding shallow, good times are back!

Andrew: Yes Sir sunfish are truly some very neat fish to catch! It seems that they have a different look in each part of the state! Love fishing this time of year!

Thanks Curtis and eyeball for the replies. Curtis: I have only seen a few Rios on nest. Their spawn should be in full swing in another week or so. Sunfish spawn is in full spawn mode. Been seeing a lot of sunfish on nest.

Nice fish. Love those spawning colors! What is the most colorful sunfish you catch? Also are there summer,fall,and winter colors on the sunfish?

Thanks Gitter for the reply. The Longear by far has the best colors. Spring spawn is usually the most colorful time for the sunfish. They also show some nice colors during the summer and summer spawn. Winter time the colors seem to fade especially if the fish have been in deeper water!

Thanks for the information Chuck. It seems to me that late March through April along with the month of October are the most colorful months for the sunfish.
