4 cyl Tacoma w/ 16 ft Jon Boat

4 cyl Tacoma w/ 16 ft Jon Boat - 05/24/08 08:56 PM

For the time being, I have a 4cyl 2005 Tacoma.

The boat is a 16 ft Jon Boat w/ a small Dilly Trailer.

I tow the boat approximately 3 miles to the lake. My top speed is usually 35mph.

Does anyone see a problem with this? I just don't want to run into problems farther down the road.

It should be just fine as long as it's within the towing capacity of the truck. I pull my Pro Team 175 with my 95 Toyota pickup with a 4 cyl. I'd bet my boat is a lot heavier than yours.

I hauled mine up to Ray Roberts today for the first time and it behaved great. It just took a while to get up to speed. smile

I pulled and 18' Xpress with a 4 cyl Nissan for over two years and 30,000 miles with zero problems. Toyota is a lot better truck and you will experience no problems.

I pulled an 18 foot Ranger with a 1986 Toyota one ton for 13 years. It had 240 thousand miles and blew a head gasket when I moved to another truck.
About half those miles were pulling the boat.

Should be no problem.

I have a 2005 Tacoma Access Cab 4wd with the 4 cyl and pull my 15' Mitzi Skiff regularly at speeds up to 70 mph. I currently have 66K on the Tacoma. No problems encountered.

You won't have any problems. I've pulled bigger boats than that all over North Texas with a little Mazda 4-banger truck with no problems at all.

If you have an Automatic you should get a tranny cooler to be on the safe side.

Howdy Ryno, I can put your mind at ease. I have a 1448 Grumman jon boat with a 25 johnson. Homebuilt trailer that weigh's ALOT. Towed it for the first time last Monday with no problem's using a 95 ford ranger with a 2.3 4 cylinder. I think it's rated at just a hundred HP. Weakest vehicle I ever owned. Dang thing downshift's in a slight headwind LOL. Towed it 60 mph on the highway, with no stress. Hill's were a small problem. Would drop about 5 mph at full throttle. Picked the steepest boat ram around where I live. Again, no problem. No wheel spin. took about half throttle to pull it out of the water. I did have some weight in the bed as was suggested here, but think I could do without it. Using bumper mounted hitch and no tranny or oil cooler. Will eventually get a frame mounted hitch and cooler's now that I'm confident with the li'l truck that could.

Lol I can also set your mind at ease I did much of the same pulling as you with my old man's 16 footer (weighed hardly anything) and my 1990 ford escort. I would go about 10 miles to the lake and had a couple stretches of 55 mph and it had no problems for over 10 years.
