Used Car Trade-in Prices

For quite some time I have been hearing that you will never get more for your trade-in than nowadays. Well, I took my vehicle to CarMax today to see what I could get for it. I have to be upfront and confess that my car has a lot of miles on it. To cut to the chase, they didn't offer me squat. The cars they are selling are at least 25% more expensive than they have been, but the trade-in pricing is the same. Typical.

There is still a finite number of useable miles before a car is considered worthless on a retail market. What did you expect? Hell, there’s a 2008 19 foot Skeeter for sale for $32k on the for sale section. It ain’t ever gonna sell at that price, but the owner can wish and hope.

I think the outta wack market is gonna come back down to reality this year.

High mileage limits lenders, especially for the credit challenged. I've been thinking of a new ride and checked with them the other day on my '20 F250 with 30k miles. They offered me MSRP, thats almost $8k more than I paid for it.

I found the same thing when I went to trade on of my work trucks last. And I was pissed because I had bought 5 vehicles from him previously. I told my salesman to tell his used car manager to go screw himself and went and bought my new vehicle somewhere else.

I think I got a pretty good deal on my 2017 Tundra that I traded for a new 2022. They gave me 10,000 less than what I paid for it in 2017 and it is 5 years old, but, it has less than 100,000 miles on it. I thank it was a fair price.

Seems like the crazy used trade in prices are for certain models: suburbans, Tahoes, 3/4 & 1 ton trucks. The new prices are stupid on most models.

The 2022 Tundra that I got was only 10,000 more than what I paid for the 2017 and it offered a lot more options and improvement than what my old one had. It has more safety items and they improved on luxury items on the interior. New body stile and a new engine that is supposed to get better milage.

Probably so. I bought my 2015 with 60,000 miles on it in 2018 for $25,998. That same car with comparable mileage is going for $30,998.

I have a 2015 Tahoe and get at least two emails and phone calls every day from dealerships wanting to buy it. So great I could get a good price, but then trying to buy a new car they don't have it, or they can't get it, or it costs way way too much.

Its crazy. Checked values on my 2.5 yr old / 27K mile truck. +15-20% over what I paid for it. But its exactly what I wanted, nearly perfect, and a replacement would be plus 40% what I paid.

The market is high right now for high-end stuff, not so much for low-end stuff. They're giving away loans and money like candy, but nobody wants to spend money on an old clunker. The stuff that's gone up in value is the stuff in high demand, which isn't old higher mileage stuff.

I've had offers to buy my 2019 Silverado 2500 Duramax for 25% more than I paid a year ago. But if you were responsible and kept driving an older car, you missed out on the value growth. Is what it is...

I had a real nice Bronco with average miles for the model year. I don't remember exactly how many but well less then 100k. I wanted to trade it in on a new F150. Dealership said it was pretty much worthless and offered $5k. I told them to stick it. I have never stepped foot in that dealership since. I sold it myself within a week for $8k. I have traded a few and I never settle for first or second offers.
