Ram Oil Change

Ram Oil Change - 07/07/21 09:38 PM

I got lazy and let the local dealer do my oil change on a 2015 Ram 1500 with the 3.6L V6. It was supposed to be a full synthetic oil change. The receipt says Penzoil 5W20 SN-GF/5 oil. Does anyone know if this is full synthetic or a blend?

I’d guess the “sn” in the part number would mean synthetic. “Gf” would be filter and 5 would be 5 qts.

The real clue would be cost. A basic, conventional 5qt change would be in the $30-$40 range. A synthetic would be closer to $80-$90.

SN is a rating code used by the American Petroleum Institute, I believe there are synthetic and conventional SN rated oils.

A quick search shows Penzoil 5W20 SN-GF/5 is a full synthetic oil.

Says synthetic blend, not full synthetic. Not the same oil quality at all.

The 3.6Liter V6 engine and 8 Speed transmission both run great. No check engines lights on 66K miles which is what I expect. It is just a commuter truck with no towing on a regular basis. I still do not like the rotary transmission shifter but it is not a deal breaker.

They even hold up to towing well if you ever need it, wont win any races, but the truck will take it in stride... assuming size/weight appropriate loads.

Best I can tell is the SN-GF5 does not specify a specific oil. It is only the API requirements that it meets. Penzoil makes at least a synthetic blend and full synthetic that carry the same SN-GF5 rating. If you want to know exactly what oil is in the vehicle you likely need to ask the service place. Other than that, the oil meets the requirements of the manufacturer and you just need to follow the service schedule per the makers requirements. Your good to go.

Hence the reason you change your own oil.
