Hoping to try it out sometime this week.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:23 PM

what size hook is that? my thoughts would be to wrap around the hook further before bringing it back through the eye and shorten the hair. looks a lot like my first hair rigs!

Overall...VERY GOOD JOB!

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:35 PM

I'll try what you just told me and post a pic in a minute.. The hook sz4 eagle claw. I trust these eagle claw hooks, never made me regret them.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:43 PM

looks good. I vary the length of my hair based on the bait. that looks like it was tied for a range cube with a maize topper. Good stuff.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:44 PM

Better?

Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:45 PM

I plan on using maize so what would a good length be? Bigfishseeker had some maize of his own and it seemed to be the bait of choice for the day.. They didn't care for my sweet corn.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:46 PM

Looks good, that one is good for a few kernels of maize. Looks like that will catch to me.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 08:47 PM

Cool, thanks. Might go out and try tuesday, weather is looking better. I'll post some pics if I get any.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/09/10 10:56 PM

Thats a good start HIF. The first one can take more kernals and still be used.
As you look more into hair rigs and other ways of rigging for carp it can get pretty sophisticated, but a simple rig like yours should work fine.
You might find that you miss some hookups unless your hooks are extremely sharp.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 01:18 AM

good job on ur first hair rig, ow get that baby in th water and catch some fishies.

I personally like to keep my hook-links about 3" long

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 07:40 PM

New rig I tied last nite with sweet corn/strawberry boilie

Posted By: buffaloman chris

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 08:19 PM

Shorten the hair put the boilie to where it's just under the bend of the hook.
Posted By: Joepoolfisher

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 08:36 PM

yep a little long.or you could snowman it witha smaller boilie or pop up
Posted By: Stephen Clark

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 09:08 PM

other than the hair length you have a winner

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 11:18 PM

what hooklink are you using there?
Posted By: BlkDynamite

Re: Hair Rig - 05/10/10 11:46 PM

8", I take criticism well. Is that length bad or good?
Posted By: Erick M

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 12:27 AM

8" isn't bad, if you're using the method I'd make it about half that length. Usually I'll use anything from 3" to about 10" depending on the bait, or circumstance, I was mostly curious as to what kind of hooklink it is. There's not really a bad length; however I'd experiment with different lengths and materials until you find something.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 12:51 AM

My bad, its a 80 lb braid I had. Hey that rhymes.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 01:03 AM

Give it a try.
There are some great carpers that use longer hairs and others that like the boilie or maize about 1/4 in from the bend of the hook.
I would be tempted to try a short one on one rod, a longer one on the other and see what difference it makes.
Posted By: BlkDynamite

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 01:15 AM

Im gonna shorten them some and try the "snowman" double boilie on another. So far Ive only caught a few cats and a long run that didnt get hooked.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:10 AM

Okay, I'm 1 step away from catching carp on a hair rig.. Any clever ideas for a stopper? I forgot to buy beads at hobby lobby and does anyone have clever ideas for a stopper made from a house held object? I have 1 item, but rather use something with less profile.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:13 AM

You could cut toothpicks into segments about 1/2 a CM long, that would probably work. I've seen guys use bits of grass also. Big Carp Tackle always includes as a freebie those plastic locking ties that you use to wrap wiring with. These work very well as a stop, you just have to cut them off as needed.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:17 AM

Awesome, thanks man.
Posted By: whiterockjesse

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:17 AM

use heavy mono or line from a weed whacker .1317 are you using a feeder ? that may attract more carp to your baits

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:30 AM

I'm going to throw some oatmeal out there.. Mix it with water and toss some clumps out.. Then use the maize I made..
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:30 AM

And the toothpicks work perfectly.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 02:33 AM

Im using pva bags with pellets and crushed up a few boilies

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 03:09 AM

Any clever ideas for the baiting needle.. I'm using a piece of wire right now.
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 03:22 AM

Meh, I'm stuck with my wire, I'll post pics tomorrow night!
Posted By: BlkDynamite

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 03:41 AM

Before I bought one I made one out of a safety pen
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 03:49 AM

I looked for a safety pin and a paper clip, don't have either of them.. Any other ideas?

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 05:03 AM

Hey guys take a crappie hook and straighten it out. You can use the barb to hold the loop while you pull your bait onto the hair. This is usually eveyones first baiting needle. I was lucky. Zach gave me a needle at our 1st fish-in.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/11/10 09:50 PM

Just make sure you don't stick it in your finger! lol
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 01:49 AM

I actually got a hook in the finger hahah. I had to do something wrong, I lost count of how many runs I had, either the hair was to long or the hook was to big.. I could've caught AT LEAST 10 carp today.. Oh well, you learn from you mistakes huh?
Posted By: dturnerfish

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:04 AM

And you learn what you do right. Your bait sounds like it did it's job!
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:05 AM

By the way, plain oatmeal attracts carp like crazy! ...

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:08 AM

what bait did you have on the hair??
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:11 AM

Secret flavored maize, bigfishseeker told me not to tell.
Posted By: bfs0078

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:14 AM

See I told ya that it would work. I just shortened up my name a bit. Try to get some #6 hooks and see if it makes a difference.
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 02:27 AM

Oh haha, just noticed.. I'm going to get a smaller hook and shorten my hair and try this weekend again.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 04:46 AM

you can use guitar string or pipe cleaners as a stopper
Posted By: Stephen Clark

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 01:38 PM

I would not recomment either one, use ties for the labels on fire Extinguishers
Posted By: Hook in Finger

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 01:42 PM

I just use the grass over there, I haven't had problems with it so far. Thanks for the advice though.

Re: Hair Rig - 05/12/10 10:49 PM

Will do, wanted to go today but I don't want to go down there by myself.. Yesterday saw a few snakes, not sure if they were poisonous or not but rather not risk it especially because it'll get dark in a few hours. I chummed that place a lot, hopefully the carp will gain a pound or two, haha. Thunder storms coming all week so it looks like I'm stuck home for a bit.
