Lake Grapevine Carp

I have been seeing Carp actively feeding on the surface and occasionally jumping while kayak trolling for Sandbass around Lake Grapevine in the early morning. Would drifting a miniature marshmallow on a circle hook work to catch them? I am not a carp fisherman and am open to suggestions because the Sandbass are not cooperating.

Circle hooks are designed for fish with hard mouths. Use a live bait hook, an octopus hook, or even better a Carp hook! Bass Pro in Grapevine sells Gamakatsu G-Carp in packs of 10 for $4.29.

Marshmallows would work a charm, but I'd be throwing bagels, dog food, or fish pellets. Check this magazine out below for a great guide on surface fishing for Carp.

What are the carp eating on the surface? I would try to replicate that. I have seen them like sucking air and jumping but never really got the idea they were feeding so I am curious about all this..

Carp are very adaptive and if folks out there are throwing bread to ducks, they will key in on that food source. I know it might be a learning curve for you, but I find it easier to throw bread flies with a fly rod because the fly itself has very little weight so they float. Easy to make using poly macramé yarn, and I grease them a little to keep them floating all day. If you wanted to stick with spinning gear, a clear plastic float with a fly attached a few feet down would likely work as well.

I have no idea what they were eating. Shad were in the area. This was just after dawn and there were no bread crumbs. I could be wrong and they may not have been feeding. I went again last Saturday morning but the carp and gar were no longer i the area.
