Weird Buffalo from Lewisville

We caught an odd one




And a very different but cute one

Nice fish. The top one is a black buffalo (Ictiobus niger) and the other one is a smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus).

Thanks! At first thought I thought she was a Black Buffalo, but the mouth just did not seem right to me. In the past the ones I have seen they were much much smaller, closer to a small mouth. Not sure. Not sure if Buffalo can hybrid or not. Will have to research that some day!

I have caught buffalo that appear to be hybrids. Black buffalo in Texas are more widely distributed than some of the literature indicates. More research on the black buffalo needs to be done. I have provided specimens to the Biodiversity Center in Austin for analysis.
