Butcher Bird - 01/30/14 07:33 PM
Shot this Loggerhead Shrike on my way home yesterday. Also called a "Butcher Bird " for their penchant to hang their pray on thorns and fence barbs.

One of my favorites. About 25 years ago I saw one for the first time. I was out in the front yard of my parents house and saw one carrying a male cardinal. Hung it up on the barded wire fence!! I will never forget that. I look forward to seeing them every year by my place of work.

I see two of them that hang around a couple of miles from my house almost every day. I have never seen one hang it's pray but I would live to photograph it some day.
Cool picture. Thanks for sharing.
Seen grasshoppers stuck on a barbwire fence.

I'm going to start looking for that at every fence I come to.
