In light of recent snake posts...

In light of recent snake posts... - 03/20/11 01:52 PM

I will post some photos from Blake and I's herping trip today. Blake (my son) predicts our first species to be Crotalus atrox. Safe bet considering we will be 200 miles west of the metroplex. I will post photos as we find various species throughout the day. We should be on location in nearly an hour. Of course I will be submitting posts via phone.

To you guys interested in following the thread, would you like me to just submit photos without identifying the species to see who can make IDs first or go ahead and include the ID with the photos?

Interesting. I've never intentionally gone herping, but if I did and took pics of my results, rest assured everyone would have to try to ID a headless snake.

Blake was right about the first species, but no photo. Here is the second.

Great Pics! Awesome way to spend the day and with the kids at that! I can't tell you how many days we spent in the Everglades "and any other spot with critters" looking for snakes when I was a kid.

That Scarlet King; if im not mistaken, is a nice one! Great Find...

You have the genus. It is Lampropeltis triangulum gentilis aka great plains milk snake.
It must have been nice herping the Everglades. The family and I went to the Keys nearly two years ago and we were able to get a few unique endemic species while visiting. I wish we had visited the glades as well.

We don't. We use snake hooks to handle them. No need to risk injury. We only snapped photos. We also weren't collecting Crotalus for specimens. Our objective was to collect the species in the photo where you only see my hand and the snakes. These are Sonora semiannulata.

We did find three other species, but they wouldn't hold still for photos.
