Jupiter and 4 moons 09/30 + Saturn 10/01 - 09/30/23 06:34 AM
UPDATE 10/01: Added Saturn pics below
-----------------------------
I got disgusted by the Ranger game and decided to try to photograph Jupiter instead, since it's so bright right now. I don't really have the equipment necessary to get a decent image of individual astro objects other than the moon, but I was happy I was able to get something.
I had to go out three times because the images from the first two tries didn't work out. I finally got this a little after midnight the morning of 09/30.
Jupiter and four moons:
Here it is upscaled 2x, and the moons are much easier to see:
Update: Moons from left to right are Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto. The size of our moon is in between the first two. Ganymede is the largest moon in the Solar System.
I was really happy to get enough resolution to see the light and dark stripes even before upscaling.
Here is the moon taken at the same time - I used the moon to get focus and then locked it because there was no way to focus on Jupiter, and infinity focus wasn't cutting it. This is a four image stack:
All images taken using a Sony with a 500mm Tamron lens, from my driveway in Mansfield.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 10/01:
Per question from Curt0407 that motivated me to go ahead and try, I was able to photograph Saturn. I'm really at the limit of what my current gear can do, but I was able to get something.
Here is Saturn, and I believe to the left is its moon Titan, but I can't be sure about that. It's has the correct color cast and seems to be in the correct relative position from what I see online, but it's just a guess. I couldn't see it at all while making the photo, I only found it when I opened the files in Lightroom/Photoshop. Titan is the second largest moon in the Solar System.
Here is Saturn upscaled 2x:
So again, I'm really happy with these results. I thought it was pretty cool to be able to make out the shape of Saturn with the rings.
