It had a thorn in its back. I'm not sure if it was happy I pulled it out in the last pic or mad because Gar1970 was holding it.

Looks a bit skinny, maybe with that thorn out it can catch more mice and faftten up a bit. Good work.

On closer inspection the snake appears to be a Great Plains Rat Snake (Elaphe gutatta emoryi). Great job releasing it and helping it out.

One of my favorite snakes! I like when they're around -- great for keeping the mice population under control.

Re: Helping a shoulder-less one - 03/12/22 12:00 AM

Beautiful snake.
My neighbor came over one day last year wanting to borrow a tool. We went into my shop to get it and as I leaned over to get said tool out of a drawer my neighbor asked if I had any rubber snakes in my shop. I do not. I also new immediately that he was seeing a real snake, probably somewhere very close to my head. Sure enough, I have a miter saw stored on top of that particular cabinet and rat snake was curled up under the saw. Once I figured out it wasn't a Copperhead, Timber Rattler, Puff Ader or King Cobra and my heart rate came down a little, we caught it and released back into the wild.

Thank you Capt. Mac for sharing your story. thumb A snake is a snake and I freak out when I see one.πŸ™ƒ weather it's a good snake or a dangerous one.
