Blue Moon - Snowy Egret in Flight

Celebrating the small joys in life and the decline of my 50 plus day cough, I captured this image of a Snowy Egret in flight over my backyard roost today in harsh midday sun. Shooting white birds is always challenging and requires a solid understanding of exposure. They reflect so much light feather details are lost if highlights are blown out. On a positive note for bird in flight photographers, a little cough seems to mean take wing in bird speak... All joking aside, prayers for all.

Godspeed~

Beautiful. I must say the detail in the feathers look awesome.

Very nice photo . Thank you .
I can't believe how awesome digital camera's are today . I remember the terrible pixilated pics from the early 90's and could nor understand why anyone would want one . My dad had one that used the 3-1/2 inch floppy disk .

Thanks! Very much appreciate the kind words. Backyard bird watching with the spring migration upon us is one thing we can do to pass the time...

Thanks. There's a pic of my basic wildlife rig in my signature. I shot that with a Canon dSLR pro body and Canon 500L f/4 + Canon 1.4x extender. For support I use a Really Right Stuff tripod and Wimberley Gimbal.

Really well done shot!!! White birds have been a problem for me as well. Took this a couple weeks ago but not at your level...

BassManRudy - nice shot. When I shoot white birds I always use full manual mode and select exposure settings that will allow me to capture feather details, which means everything else will be underexposed. That’s OK as it creates a natural vignette and brings more focus on the subject.

Find some park birds to practice on. Once you get the settings and technique down, you'll be super excited with the results.

Thanks again everyone for the kind words.

Good idea about going to the park to practice! I'm still getting used to the manual settings. My friend suggested using the "P" mode as that will allow me to set some basics first. But when its a quick shot as much as I don't prefer Auto I use it.
