Lake Waco Thursday morning September 26th with nephew David Holman. On our first brush pile at 7:45 and immediately 2 nice crappie (ones in the picture) in the boat. Another 10 minutes, 3 more nice ones in the boat, then the dinks started biting so finally we moved to another brush pile. Bingo, 3 nice ones in the boat before the wind changed from east southeast to west southwest and breezy. After the wind change no more keepers and very few throwbacks. Checked several more brush piles with only a throwback here and one there. The wind continued to get higher so we headed to the ramp at 11 with only 8 crappie in the ice chest. The bp where we caught the keepers were in 14 and 16 feet of water. The keepers were caught on a red body white tail jig and pink chartreuse feather jig. Tried several other colors with zero results.

That's what is strange & it's happened to me & a few others I know here and on Sandlin. Light east or SE wind - great bite, shift to the west and on NW - NADA
I've always heard "Wind out the east, fish bite the least; wind out of the west, fish bite the best" hmmm
Guess nobody told these NE Texas Crappie bang
I'd rather be fishing and not catching, then just wishing I was fishing thumb
Thanks for reafirming what I have been pondering about.
Great photos!

ive never done well on a west wind, gimme south and SE all day. This time of year the wind will go a lot of times. NES . when the front comes in its out of the north, fishing tough, it will gradually shift out of the east, then back to south, . Sometimes a short period of west wind.
You can tell when the front is over just by paying attention to the wind, when it starts coming out of the east, from north, its usually done. Till the next one. enjoy the south wind for a while, then here comes old mr north again, fishing tougher. That playing the fronts. frequent wind shifts seem to always put a damper on the fishing. or no wind.

heres something else to consider, I think most crappie fisherman would be in agreement that most times crappie are found on the downwind side of the brushpile. The downwind side is primarily the north side, since the wind primarily blows out of the south,85 percent of the time. . So what happens when you fish a different wind other than a south wind? Your boat position must change. So the boat position, and angle that you are fishing the pile from may have a lot to do with why we catch or don't catch.

I realized this a while back while fishing a north wind. I started fishing the upwind side of the pile which was awkward an d started catching fish, so the rest of the day, I fished the upwind side, and repeated the pattern.,. So when the wind is out of the North, maybe try bringing your long rod, and dip into the side of the pile that is normally downwind of a south blow. I don't think the fish constantly move around the piles to get downwind. I think they sit on the side that's usually downwind, (north). In other words always try to fish the north side of a pile first. If the wind is out of the west, don't just fish the east edge of the pile, fish the north side too.
When the wind shifts direction, the fish may not have shut down, the wind may have put your boat position at a disadvantage relative to whaere the crappie are holding.
