Lake Lewisville Relaxin - 07/20/11 03:38 PM

Me and the partner went to LL yesterday for a couple hours to fun fish and just dunk some minnows. The fish are biting very very light. We only fished with minnows today and we found fish from 8' to 36' most fish came off timber in 16'. The bite was so light all you could feel was the weight on the rod thats it. On one tree they hit aggresive for about 30 minutes but other than that if you werent paying attention you would not get a fish. Seems like they would mouth the bait and spit it out as soon as they did it if you missed that chance you missed the fish. We ended up with 27 keepers.
My question is we have about 15 brushpiles we fish and all summer to date weve probably only caught 10 fish off these and not even a bite yesterday 1. Pretty strange because last year at the same time and same underwater structure we were doing very well. Maybe were just hitting em at the wrong time? Who knows like I said fished a bunch of em yesterday in the same depths we were getting bit on timber and nada.
Fun day anyway

I have not had much luck on LL BP'S either...I have migrated to fishing bridge pilings and timber during day. Most of my fish over the past few weeks have been after 9 pm using lights. Nite fishing for crappie right now is awesome!

That is three and four of us that have been getting "stumped" on the shallower brush. I talked with a fellow TFF'r yesterday evening and he complained of the same thing. I just see too much little baitfish out there. I think the bigger crappie are just opening their mouths and getting all the food they need. I am having better luck in some of the deeper areas, timber and bridge pillars.

How deep are you fishing when night fishing under your lights?

I'm also noticing a difference this year in fish holding on brush piles. I have 7 or 8 different piles sunk, and they have not been as productive as last year. May have to try my luck at some night fishing soon.

At least it won't be 104 degrees.

I think the fish are on the piles, just about everywhere, but the cycles of feeding times get fewer and shorter in this heat. I too have been experiencing the light tap and then they let it go. I think this is just an aggression bite, the jig is right in front of them, and they just bite it and spit it out. On days like this, you will probably struggle all day, you just have to move from pile to pile, and try and get the aggressive fish off of each one, and hope to end the day with a decent mess in the cooler, sometimes just a crappie nibble, or some shad spray, or downsizing your baits can make the difference between, them holding on a little longer or not. Dont think that downsizing your bait will cause you to catch only smaller fish, Icaught some of my nicest crappie so far this summer on a little 1 and 1/4 inch soft plastic by slab bandit. When they are just lipping the bait like that, dont jerk the rod to set the hook, just lift it, and if you feel tension, then jerk, and you will see that it is barely hooking thier lip, you will get a few more fish in the cooler this way, when they are just lipping the bait.

Track the lake level to where you catch fish from year to year and you will see that LL is very predictable/consistent. Someone else suggested I do this and I'm glad I tried it.
