Navarro Mills Report 7/14/09 - I had the Day Off - 07/14/09 08:36 PM

First day off I've had in months - so what do I do - Go Fishing of course.

Went to Navarro Mills and I would say its GOOD. Not a lot of Big Crappie but plenty of them.

Hit the first three spots I came to out of Oak Park and limited.

All caught on minnows (I wanted to catch the shad and try them but I was just to lazy and really didn't need to - but I should have just to let you know how those would have worked today - good, real good I'm sure especially on the bigger shad to catch bigger Crappie).

It was fun to do your own thing this morning - go get em Guys & Gulls,

Yes it is fun just to fish for fun - normally release them all, but we were just about out of fish to eat - so I kept some (I had not kept any fish since 2008). I felt guilty not having my wife or sons out there and just me keeping fish - but we'll eat those quick and they will get their turn – I promise.

Mark... Your supposed to live by your own standards and throw all them fish back. Just poking fun at ya, looks like a fish fry to me.

I need to try using shad sometime. I can usually catch it year round at Texoma.

Darrel,

For me - that is a vacation – just me fishin by myself – If I do happen to keep fish it’s not many to begin with (that to me is a vacation).

Normally I have lots and lots of fish to clean everyday – that a good thing but it wears you out – put when it’s just me – that is my best times,

I read somewhere "Some men go fishing not knowing its really not fish they are seeking"
I can understand where your coming from Mark. Nice limit and you need a break like that from time to time.

"Some men go fishing not knowing its really not fish they are seeking" - I agree - it's just being out there - see the birds and just the water it's self.

Everyday I take off from the dock - and what makes me happy and have piece of mind - it's the birds, the water and the open spaces. Yea - we are going to catch a lot of fish - but its everything else that makes it really special.

Keith,

They were on brush piles in 8 to 12 feet of water. I did try a fall off (off a point) in about 17 feet of water caught bunches there but they were mostly small (but they were thick there) Plus that fall off had a little cover on it too.

For me those crappie are always pretty much in or just on top of their brush (where ever and what ever depth of water you fish brush - most of the time they stay right next to it or in it).

My objective is to feel that brush (get hung up in it - get out and hold it right there - inches from it), I feel around like a blind man - hit that brush and that is where I want to be.
