Huge thanks to Koobycrappie

Well the day really sucked. Decided to sleep in this morning needed some rest. Got to the lake around 0930. Went to one of my favorite brush piles and caught a couple of fish. Went out to the place Sawltydawg and I fished yesterday and couldn't find it. Decided to go to the Fox cove and that is where the problem started. Went to start the motor and that booger didn't want to start. Tried, tried and tried again. Luckily I was fishing near my buddy Koobycrappie. He towed me back to the ramp. Thanks KC. You're my hero. Got the boat on the trailer and went to the top of the ramp. Hit the starter and bang it started right up. Got it home and it started once and then wouldn't start again. It's headed to the boat shop Monday. Thanks again Kevin for taking time out of your fishing day to assist me. Oh yeah he did get a pic of me being towed behind his boat. I wasn't following him around the lake. Anyone got a seat tomorrow?

I knew when I met Kevin at the Granger tourney he was a class act... So he proved it today... Sorry to hear about the boat Dave, hope it ain't nothing serious....

To add to the disappointment find out that Kevin tore'em after after I declined on going back out with him. Goes to show that good things happen to good people like Kevin. He tore'em up. Oh well live and learn. Boat is going to the shop tomorrow.

What the heck? Just went out and cranked the motor. Bingo! Started right up. Anyone have any suggestions? Gonna change the plugs and plug wires tomorrow.

I would look at the battery connections and the swith connections before I would change the plug wires and plugs. Sounds like a loose connection or corrosion type thing, anyway thats my 2 cents, sorry to hear of the problem.

I had a evanrude that done that one time, it was the power pack. It would start every now an then, then when you put it in gear it would die.

The motor cranks just fine and runs great once started. Just seems to not get any spark sometimes.

Good point. DB, I had a similar problem only to find out that I had a corroded battery connection. I would twist the wire and it would start right up. The problem seemed to worsen, so I changed the connection (which didn't look that bad) and I have not had a problem in 3 three years. It's definitely worth a shot.

Normally it is the power pack so I agree with Ratmo. Easy to replace yourself. You can check the next time it acts up by pulling a spark plug on either side (on a six cylinder one complete side will not have spark if there is a power pack failure). Plugs and wires will not correct the issue. I had the same issue on a 1988, 150 Evinrude two years ago and replaced the power pack only to have the problem come back after several trips. Then I was advised to replace power pack, stator and timing sensor (not sure timing sensor is correct description)since one of the three could be causing the others to fail over time. Advice was not to replace one at a time since one could be causing the others to fail and you will chase the problem for ever by replacing one at a time unless you have the tools and knowledge to diagnose each component. Otherwise just bite the bullet and replace all three (about $1K in parts), which makes good sense when it comes to electronics. Once I replaced all three, I have not had another issue. If you plan to go this route, e-mail me and I will get you the correct description on the timing part and a place in Houston that you can order parts at a savings. Would recommend you get someone to replace stator and timing sensor since you have to pull the flywheel to get to these parts. Kenny Kline at Kline Marine replaced mine for about $150 in labor. Hey Dave, Seems kind of stupid, but check you Auto kill switch too. Mine actually went out and would intermitantly work. I replaced the switch with one of the 2 I got on clearance at walmart for $.50 and she has worked fine ever since! It took me 2 hours of t-shooting to find it was the issue. The no spark to the spark plugs sent me down that route. If you need one I have one. :-D

Well fellar's went out and disconnected/cleaned all the electrical wires. Started right up 10 times in a row. Still gonna replace the plug wires since one seems to be a bit burnt and they appear to be the original wires. Haven't ruled out the power pack though. (Brent's dad, sure it was 1K in parts? Sounds kinda pricey.)Buddy of mine suggested checking the power pack also. Thanks for the assistance all.

At what RPM do you think this motor ought to idle?

Yeah, me too. If it is a power pack problem and they are as pricey as Brent's Dad says, think I will buy the new boat and make this one a permanent crappie structure @ the bottom of Granger. Just kidding. I love my boat. I love my boat.

LoL... Dave if it is the power packs check out http://Boatfix.com they are about the best price for motor parts. That is where I got my Swithces from when I had to replace them on my old Mercury. Ran $125 each where everywhere else they wanted $200+ each.

All three parts ran around $800 to $1K. You can purchase a power pack for around $150, depending on motor size. Get on the web and shop is my suggestion. Power packs are very easy to replace. Besides the kill switch, also check to make sure the power pack ground wire is making contact. Don't be fooled about starting 10 times in a row. Electronic issues can be deceiving.

H an H marine is a good boat mechanic. He's located beween cedar park and lakeline mall. I've used him several times and he's done me right.

The problem sounds electrical tho.
