Navarro Mills 2 lb.+ Crappie - 04/11/23 02:25 AM

Hello TFF! My curiosity is killing me, so I wanted to consult the hive. I have been fishing Navarro Mills since I was a kid. I remember a time that this great fishery was well known for 2 lb.+ Crappie. The Crappie bite has been exceptionally good for me this spring, however I am struggling to catch one 2 lb. Crappie out of all the Crappie that I am catching. My last 3 outings out I have averaged 11 lbs on my best 7 fish. So roughy 1.5 to 1.75 per fish. Don’t get me wrong, those are great fish! But I’ve been searching high and low for that 2 lb’er! I know there are some there, and I know some have been caught this spring, just curious if NM still has the abundance of 2 lb + Crappie that it used to. if you’ve been fishing NM recently, or have an opinion, what are your thoughts?

I have been targeting bigger fish/females, so I have been fishing away from the bank on submerged brush/timber averaging 14 FOW. Catching some that are already spawned out.

NO, I meant are you using live tech? Because if you are that could be the answer to the Question.

I see them in the timber but very easily spooked. The submerged stuff in 12-20 seems to have plenty of fish but most of the "big fish" there are like you said 1.5-1.11 and the bigger fish seem to be in the timber in 7-12 FOW has been my experience the last few months there.

If you are scopin & everyone is scopin the larger fish then Logic would suggest that more 2lbers are leaving the lake! It does`nt mean however that they are no longer in there it just means they are not as plentiful as in seasons past and in places you are looking. I remember a few spawns back before Live scope Ash & White Rock creeks both were yielding 2lbers on a regular basis & I think it was because the lake was well below normal pool & it was a bit difficult to get back in there to fish them unless you had a shallow draft boat. I had & still have an 8ft pelican that I used to get in there & I managed to get my share of larger fish but getting there was the problem even with my little boat because of all the dang shallow spots. You`d go a few yards and you get stuck get free go a few more yard and get stuck again! Once you get in the creek it was fine but it wore you out getting there. Currently the lake is right at Normal pool giving an inch or two. You might try them if you are adventurous just go slow until you are in . coolio

I’ve been on the lake 3 times in the last month. The fishing was good. Most of our better fish were in 14’-18’. Our biggest fish on those trips were 1.5 to 1.7.

This has been my experience as well. It has been fishing great! I just haven’t been able to find those “bigger” fish.
