Lavon Report

Lavon Report - 05/20/20 01:38 AM

Got out for a few hours this afternoon. Started mid lake, on some main lake brush in 19-20ft to see if they are out there yet. Fished 2 piles in a small area without a bite so moved areas slightly. Fished submerged timber instead from 12-18 ft and caught 1 small. Moved south about a mile and fished a brush pile in 16 ft and caught several. Almost all 11” with 1 big of 14 and a couple of smalls. Kept 7 to munch on. White/chartreuse stump bug was the ticket, switched to it after missing several short strikes on a brush glider.

I don’t like north wind days, but was able to find enough for dinner

We went to Lavon Yesterday. Dead Calm. We started on the South end down by the dam. Found no fish there at all. Tried a couple of brush piles on south end and caught several dinks, no keepers. Moved North to the standing timber North of Tickey Creek and caught 10 keepers but only two really good ones.

Seems to me when the water is flat like that, fishing gets really tough. Not only that, but since there is no wind bias it sorta confuses the Spot Lock.

Went out to Lavon yesterday morning launched at Collin park, wind out of the east seemed a lot more than 5-10 like weatherman predicted. I was not able to fish any of my normal spots kept getting blown off.
The bracket for my transducer broke so I had no sonar, moved to a shoreline blocked by wind and drifted in 14-16 ft till I got a bite or hung up, I dropped a marker and fished the spot. I caught 20 only 2 were undersized.
It was fun getting out, I guess now I need a new sonar.
I see Basspro has a sale on a Humminbird HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G3 Fishfinder/Chartplotter, thinking about getting it.

this gives me hope, sunday was slow out there and of course I am a terrible crappie fisherman.

just drop a jig to the bottom and bounce it until you touch brush?

Re: Lavon Report - 05/20/20 03:29 PM

I found 16 keepers and at least double that in dinks. Brushpiles and submerged timber in 15-20 fow, 10-15 deep.

The wind was definately more than the weatherman said. My trolling battery died 2 hours in and we ending up drifting also for a bit. Caught a couple crappie on slabs in 15ft or so hoping to find sandies haha. We didn't stay long doing that, just wasn't quite ready to leave when the battery went out.

Started seriously crappie fishing probably 4 ish years ago, fish Lavon most of the time. I don't know if i'm much "better" now then before, just have a much larger inventory of spots to go to. In the last year or so, have learned more that fish in different parts of the lake hold on different things at different times. I always knew that conceptually, just didn't have any idea how to apply it to narrow down where to go first. etc.

Gotcha, I have been on the lake since 1999 but as a hard core bass fisherman. just recently started trying to learn the crappie game.

One thing I have noticed is the boom in black crappie on the lake here as of late, the south end in particular has a bunch of nice 10.5-11” black crappie all over it. Been catching more blacks than whites down that way.

I feel like I can go out now, and pretty much get on crappie one way or another before too long. Bass on the other hand.... I swear there aren’t any in Lavon. I grew up in the upper Midwest, all there was was grass and pads. I can’t even begin to consistently catch bass in the mud filled barren bathtub that is Lavon fish

Is your trolling motor a 12 volt system by chance? We were always dying before midday with a 12 volt system.

We switched to a 24 volt system and it was one of the best decisions we ever made to our boat. We go all day with zero issues wind or no wind.

Re: Lavon Report - 05/21/20 12:59 AM

Yes sir, 12V. I just fish out of and older Tracker Pro Crappie 17.5. My battery was actually bad, put it on the charger and it gave me error codes. Looking forward to upgrading boats sometime in the next couple of years. Get some more power and for the love of goodness spot lock. I swear I blow off a spot faster than I cruise across the lake under full power

Re: Lavon Report - 05/21/20 04:38 AM

I’ve caught plenty of fish on north and east wind days, but it seems the best fishing on that lake is when it’s between 80-100 degrees outside, howling wind out of the south, bright and sunny in the heat of the afternoon.
