What do I look for in the Creeks

What do I look for in the Creeks - 12/16/19 05:37 PM

I went into Walnut Creek on Joe Pool Lake. I went about half the way in between Loyd Park and 360.
I only got one strike. It was the first time i have fished a creek. What or how should I fish that area. i think I might not have went far enough up into the creek. I don't know.
The water was low and wasn't reading many fish on my finder.
Crappie fishing is wayyyy harder than Catfishing. LOL

Just look for stumps and piles of trees in the water

Try the other creek at Joe Pool.

It depends on the creek as some I catch them shallow and some deep. The most important thing I would say is cover in the deepest water you can find. It also helps to try and learn the creek as each year is different on when they move in and where they hold given the weather.

They can be anywhere. I am finding the in a foot and a half to 6 feet. Target any structure you can reach or cast to. Stumps are king but remember there’s hidden gold if you can find structure under water that isn’t visible.

Use your electronics to locate underwater brush you cannot see. Don’t overlook minnows. Give the fish a little of everything on the menu though and figure out what works. I use slip bobbers with minnows bit also jig deep stuff as well. Eventually you will find a pattern. Above all, be nice to people you see fishing the creeks and ask how they are doing. Lots of people don’t mind helping you with what’s working for them.

Bassthump. You are so correct. I try to be the nicest person. other fishermen are not my enemy. It is crazy how many people I have spoke to and they look at me and ignore me as if I was not even there.

Not trying to highjack my own thread. But I wonder why people are like that. Just because we are not just like them. SMH

Some folks fishing from the bank in small creeks don't like people coming in the creek in a boat. They think you should go somewhere else since you have a boat and you're scarring their fish away. Especially true if they don't have a boat.

When it comes to boats and banks. I think that both should have a level of respect. I always say. How would I treat this situation? When i had a boat. I would go as slow as possible and respect the people on the bank. When I bank fish. I would always verbalize where my gear was. Communication is important on both sides. it is not always what you say. It is how you say it. If you yell that is what is going to be received.

It would have to be a good size creek to put a boat in it..
The creek I was at Saturday wouldn't be worth the effort. You can fish the bank with a long pole or jig and bobber

There were a handful of people out there of all ethnicity and everyone was friendly and helping each other . If you get down off of that top bank to the lower bank and then need something from the top bank, you are going to have to ask for help. we all helped each other

Even when I fell over in the mud someone asked if I was ok

Good people are out there. We just can't think that everyone is the same as one bad person. I give everyone the chance to be good or bad. A Good person can get the shirt off my back. An person that I consider as a bad person will just get fed with a long handle spoon. I normally get treated the way that I treat. I try to treat everyone nice.

So when fishing the creeks from the bank. Do you bring two poles? One that is a castable and one Longer Jigging pole?

I bring a long extendable pole( you can even add some pvc pipe on the handle in to make it longer)
I bring a rod to cast with
I bring some bobbers to pop a bobber and jig
And if the minnow place is open early enough I may resort to bringing minnows as well.
and bring a stringer or bucket

and be prepared for mud. don't wear your good shoes

I used to bring both and it’s probably a good idea. Now I just bring my long pole. There’s nothing better than a hard thump on a12 foot pole while your freezing.

The “creek run” is mainly a bust small numbers of fish and 90% are dinks. The real winter fishing is in deep water on the lake.
