Lavon Summer Report - Pic Heavy

Lavon Summer Report - Pic Heavy - 08/24/19 03:37 AM

I haven't been active on the forum very much this summer so I am catching up on some fishing activities from the past 4-5 weeks.

Note: I use Lavon as my fishing laboratory in the summer when fishing solo.

1. Lake Lavon for all pics.
2. Depth 9' to 18', mainly 14-16'.
3. Minnow over jigs (naked, tipped, nibbled, etc.) David Pauling's hand tied and Rocky Tops from ProAngler Tackle.
4. Most days limits were caught, if not, nearly so, until someone cried "uncle".
5. Full moon, Gibbous moon, Waning moon - didn't matter.
6. Winds; calm to 5-10, maybe a little more at times.
7. Pics represent about 6+ trips; I didn't take pics each trip.
8. Latest date on Lavon was yesterday, August 22.
9. Braid and mono - didn't matter.
10. Water is green clear; yesterday it had a slight tinge to it.
11. Areas fished: east of dam, Livonia area
12. Minnows fished bottom bouncing; bite was all over the place. If getting taps, I would very slowly reel bait up and at about 8', it would get slammed.
13. As seen from some pics, I experimented with dying the minnows. I don't know if it improved the bite that day (Wednesday this week) as I had a limit, but when a chartreuse live minnow was used, it didn't take long for a bite. It is a messy concoction so it is not something I would do on a regular basis. I was a little bored having a near limit by 10:30am so I played around with this stuff to reach a limit by 11am and just played around for the rest of the day experimenting with other stuff.
14. The young lady is my granddaughter; 11 yo. She had a blast and as you can see, pitched in to helped PawPaw.
15. All fishing was done during the week. smile

I used Pautzke Fire Dye Chartreuse purchased from Amazon. Other colors are available. Instructions must be followed to the "T". I read conflicting instructions for 12oz and 16oz water. I used 16oz of bottled water for the concoction.

I placed about 8 minnows in the first batch and as I neared the end of those, I added a few more I had. IMO, the key to getting the color to have staying power for the minnows is to wait an hour or so before using. The bubbler is a key component to keeping the minnows alive. I guess the water could be saved for next day fishing but I don't know how fast the water will deteriorate before killing minnows. If a minnow keeper is available, I think it would work for sometime.
