Possom Kingdow Lake??

Possom Kingdow Lake?? - 06/09/19 07:01 PM

Not looking for your spots, but has anyone fished this lake in the past 10 years? I grew up going there and it had great crappie, rock bass and sandies. I heard they drained it 8-10 years ago to work on the dam or something and was wondering how the fishing has been since. I am wanting to make a trip up there but do not want to fish a lake with 3 fish in it. haha. Any help or opinions are welcome here. A lot of memories on that lake and would like to do it for old time sake but would like my CPF (Cost Per Fish) to be reasonable! LOL

Don't bother to come to PK for a while. Lake is extremely muddy right now from all the rain, probably take 3 to 5 weeks to clear up if the rain stops for a few weeks. Now before it got as muddy as it is now, the fishing was good for Crappie, Black Bass, Sand Bass, Strippers, etc. Parks and Wildlife has posted on their web site co-ordinates for fish condo's they put in the lake.

Thank you!!! I just called a Game Warden and asked about it. He said that Crappie are being caught up North more than anything. Must be because of the water. I am really wanting to go there more for the memories, but do want to catch fish. I noticed on a map of the lake that the state put out, Zone D has a lot of "Crappie Hotels". That is where I used to fish. https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/fish/recreational/lakes/possum_kingdom/structure.phtml

By the way, I used to put in at Fox Hollow. That was back in the early 70's Not sure if I have ever made it to Hells Gate.

That Zone D is Bee creek. There are some crappie there but if you put in at Fox Hollow you are much closer to cedar creek. Cedar Creek is the best fishing on the lake.

What Tom said about fishing being tough in the muddy water was correct.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I think we will be putting in by Hells Gate as his deer lease is close to that. I have not looked at how far (miles) that is. Any idea? More looking for fuel purposes and when to get out there. I appreciate any help here. Thank you!

I think I picked up a map of PK at Academy a few years ago, where they sell maps. was a few bucks and worth it. Shows names of places on the lake.

I've always heard that CC was where you should Crappie fish. I would really like to give them a shot one day out there.

C goes with what the Game Warden told me last night when I called him. As a Kid, I tore them up in D, but the lake has been drained and that has been 30 years. Thank you all for the replies though.

That's what Randy Wood PK Guide is always saying. Brazos Tom told me about a dock he fished up there and I accidentally found it and it was chock full of crappie. Randy says there are about a half dozen of those docks in Cedar creek.

Awesome. Thank you. I am excited to get there, even if we do not catch fish. Many childhood memories there. I appreciate all of your help. Heck will let you know when we go if anyone wants to meet up. Staying at Lake Life's deer lease a few miles from Hell's Gate, but plan to be on the lake as long as we can stand it for about 2.5 days.

Number 1. The lake was not drained!!! It was lowered 18 feet to work on the dam.
Number 2. Lots of water under the bridge since that happened including a couple of bouts of Golden Algea
Number 3. There are lots of fish of all species in PK
We had a house there from 1980 until 2004
