Is crystal clear water the typicaly the richest nutrient water?

Just wonder about where Canada crappie spawn in that clear water that have up there?

Crappie seem to be crappie. It is pretty much like here. They prefer semi-hard bottoms in shallow water. Often the males can be seen around the beds. They stage in deeper water, adjacent to the spawning area. Waiting for the females to decide when the time is right. The clear water doesn't seem to be a factor, and really, they have no choice. The water temp is the major factor. Often beds and males can be found on Northern shores of the lake especially when the wind is sweeping warmer water in. The sun hits longer later in the day on the North shores and they warm later in the afternoon.

If I ever find any clear water in Texas, I'll let you know. In California, where I spent 32 years, most all the lakes are very clear, and the spawns seems to be the same there as they are here.

The Mississippi is as fertile as they get, and its purdy muddy... I have found the clearer the water the deeper they spawn, its a light thing not a fertility thing.

Hmmm, do they have zebra mussels over there? Please tell me you didn’t import them to Texas, from California?!

I have fished in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (not to mention Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and N. Dakota). Mostly for walleye, northern pike and yellow perch, BUT I have caught spawning crappie and bluegills, rock bass and trout. I was on a lake in Ontario in May and caught crappie on logs and other debris in less than 10' of water and you could actually see the fish. As they say, gin clear. All black crappie and a big one was 11" long. They were spawning and you could see the males and females swimming side by side laying eggs. No trolling motors and we would anchor away from the structure and pitch slip corks and minnows. If you got too close to the brush with the boat they would all swim away. In July and August we would go swimming in the lakes in the afternoon. Don't know the water temp. but it was really nice. Just had to really check for leaches after you got out. Those suckers looked like they were 12" long to me!!!! I hated them. Of course....this all was in the early 70s to mid 8os.........then I came to Texas!!! I want to go back again someday....but it is a farther drive than Lake of the Pines!!!
