You should have seen the surf yesterday when I crossed Lake Bridgeport at Runnaway Bay. Looked like a very bad day on the Ocean.

IMHO 26MPH winds is not a LITTLE wind!

Sometimes there is a fine line between bravery and being crazy. I didn't reach 73 y.o. by ignoring the difference. (Also knowing the capability of your boat.) Back in the late 50's when I was about 9 my friend and I got caught out in the open water on Caddo Lake, (there is open water on Caddo). We were in an old wooden, flat bottom, low sided boat with a mighty 3.5 hp Evinrude and in serious trouble. Don't know how we made it in. Actually must have been angels. Once in we were then in BIG trouble with our parents also. Point being, I NEVER underestimate the danger of high waves and wind.

I went out with my kid early on Lavon. I have a 16' aluminum boat so it's not exactly good in the wind. By the time we made it back to the boat ramp the waves were easily 3' tall. My kid was in tears and I was freaking out on the inside. I got him off ASAP and told him to get off the dock. We were at Lavonia. I managed to get out of my boat but it was beating against the dock so bad I couldn't tie it off. after a 5 min fight I got it tied off and thought it was going to wind up on top of that dock. Backed the truck down and opened the door. It blew out of my hand and hit the stopper so hard it bent the door. Went back to the dock and the wind was getting stronger. had to just jump into the boat on all fours as there was no way of "stepping" into it. I flailed around trying to get the rope off and started it up. I had to floor it to not hit the rocks next to the ramp. rode the waves to the trailer and by the time I jumped out of the boat and pulled it up the ramp a little the waves had filled the boat up over the top of the batteries.

Lets just say I learned a valuable lesson that could have cost me or my kid more than just some wet cloths. It was awful and I'm just glad I got out of it without anything bad happening. I always learn from making the mistakes myself and that was definitely one of them! Should have known better at my age.

We did catch a fish. a cat bit my kids spinner bait on the spinner and it wedged in his mouth hard enough that we were able to pull him up. I can assure you that's not what my little man will remember from that outing.

There was a 3/4 ton black Dodge RAM in the parking lot with a small trailer and we waited for about an hour to see if they needed help when they got back to the ramp. We never saw them so hopefully they were out of the wind somewhere waiting it out.

Then to top it all off I had to put my oldest dog down today. Been one hell of a weekend to say the least.

I don't post much but hopefully someone will see this and think twice the next time there's some bad weather forcasted.

The weathermen miss lightning/rain all the time. Gotta keep your head on a swivel on those days. What they don't miss is wind. Granted, they may miss it by an hour or two, but it's gonna hit. Doesn't matter the type of boat. If you have wind over twenty, it's nasty. Gusts to 40 like this last weekend, stay off the lake.

Something else to think about. You were at Lavonia. It's a popular ramp. No one there to help, huh? It was too windy. All you "help" stayed home.

You're right. It could have been much worse.

That should have been the warning sign when we got to the ramp and no one was there. Just glad I didn't get my son hurt. And I will be a lot more aware the next time I'm out.
