I'm moving to Texas for a little while. Any advice on choosing a plan? Landlord told me for electricity, use powertochoose.org. Should I go fixed rate or variable?
I would go with a fixed rate. If you get anything .15 and under I would lock it in for as long as they allow.
Who do you use? I also have to weigh in the cancellation fees. I'm not sure how long I will be in Texas. Could be one year, could be two.
Most contracts waive the early term fee if you are moving. If you Google power to choose the first several sites that appear are NOT power to choose and the firms on these sites use very deceptive pricing models. Make sure you look at the term sheet and understand exactly how your bill will be determined.

Yes thanks. I just read where they will waive the cancellation fees if you provide a forwarding address
When you go to the website and put in you zip code upwards of 150 companies will show with rates from mid 14 to 30 cents KWh. The lower rates are seeking customers. the going cancellation fee appears to be $175.00 but beware there are those that are a lot higher. Try for a company with longevity in the market as they can and do go out of business. The fact sheet on each provider gives you the cost breakdown.
I renewed last week. Frontier and Gexa were the 3 year fixed price leaders when you eliminate the special credit plans. You can no longer click and type your way into an electric contract. I had to call them. Frontier would not honor their price because I was an existing customer. They tried to talk me in to another plan with credits when you hit 1000 KW in a billing cycle which I did not want. So the first runner up was Gexa. I also had to call them. I told them the name of the plan I wanted and they changed the words around and tried their best to sign me up for another plan which also has credits for reaching 1000 KW in a billing cycle. It took 5 minutes to get them discussing the plan I wanted.
So other than the price per KWH, it shouldn't matter if I sign up for a 12, 24 or 36 month fixed price if they are going to forgive my cancellation fee with proof of moving right? Or is there something I'm not understanding?

Yep. Usually if you are moving it's a not an issue. No cancelation fees.

I don't know how you do it, moving all over the place, would drive me nuts, must pay really well, met you on Limestone, you saved us from a big bad thunder storm, plus we caught your pet bass under your dock during the tournament.

That was Ole Henry! Been doing this for 30 years and yes it's getting old! So I left Limestone in 2009 and from there went to Atlanta GA, Rome GA, Horseshoe bay TX, Ebony VA, Clayton NC, Radford VA, Cheyenne WY, Clinton NJ and now back to Corpus Christi. I've got about 10 more years of this and I'm done.
