he is eating, & drinking
he can't really stand up because of dizziness ( i could understand if it were me)
the doctors say, at this point, no need for surgery, but he lined out 2 surgical options
after hearing the options, we really don't want surgery
not getting worse, but there is a long way to go

He goes in for surgery in the morning, to relieve spinal fluid, that is putting pressure on his brain.

Does he have InterCranial Hypertension (ICT)? That's what Ratz has suffered with since 2007.

he suffered a head wound somehow, a blow
doctor said it doesn't have to be hard, but just right
he was in a car accident, with the bonus of a little heat stroke
he was playing golf

he had a kidney removed a couple of years ago
& cannot handle the heat

Of all brain bleeds, if you're going to have one, a subdural hematoma is the one to have. They happen on top of the brain (between the brain and the lining covering the brain) not buried within the brain tissue which makes them much easier to access and drain. Also they are always venous in nature and are under much less pressure than an arterial bleed. They ooze, don't spurt.

I've done subdural drainages in the ICU at the bedside via drilling an outlet and installing a drainage system. I say this to help you understand that a SDH is easier to manage. They are very common in older folks who are on blood thinners and fall a lot.

His surgery went well, they did exactly what you describe
They drained 5 liters of fluid off his brain
He was talking & drinking water
Semi - wack but better than expected

Great news Butch. Yeah, he's probably wacky a bit. His brain has been pushed over by a bunch of fluid and now is rebounding. He'll continue to improve!

Butch, I messed up in my original discussion on his hemorrhage saying the blood collection was between the "brain" and the lining covering the brain. The blood actually is between the skull and the lining of the brain (the dura mater). Same principle though. It is possible that if his brain does rebound fast enough that flood can collect in there again but this is maybe 10% of cases.

He was moved from ICU
to a room last night
He has speech issues
He comprehends
But can’t get all of his words out

Glad he’s doing well. I’m guessing he’s already had a speech therapy consult and swallowing evaluation.
Start investigating outpatient speech therapy options in your area for his Broca’s (motor) aphasia. PATE rehab has historically had the very best stroke/brain injury outpatient speech therapy programs.
