Insane winds today

Insane winds today - 04/22/22 10:56 PM

Been blowing over 30mph all day here in Albuquerque. Been going 35-45mph the past few hours with sustained gusts to 65mph. It's causing some serious visibility issues. Can't even see the mountains due to the dust. Driving in it is like sandblasting your vehicle. Supposed to get worse before dark.
We have a wedding to go to tonight. Was supposed to be outdoors but had to scramble at last minute to find an indoor venue event center. Should be fun. One of the worst windstorm I have been in.

My daughter hit a HR out of the park in Wall today against Ballinger in 40 MPH wind so I was a wind fan for 6 seconds or so. Not so much before or after that.

When you get a big High Pressure system bumping into a big Low pressure system, this is expected. Two opposite wind directions meeting each other. Probably 40 mph here tomorrow. Watch out high profile trucks....

Spring has always had high winds. I can remember talking about it at a bass club meeting in the 70's.

Nothing new here nor will it ever change.

Re: Insane winds today - 04/23/22 01:52 PM

The only problem with the "It’s always this windy in the spring" story is that some of us have been fishing and outdoors a lot for decades and know that two months of almost daily 30+ mph winds, with several days over 40, is not normal.

I'm 61 and this is the windiest stretch I remember.

Re: Insane winds today - 04/23/22 02:03 PM

That makes sense. They are saying this is the windiest April since 1963.

For this reason, this is not my favorite time of the year for fishing on the coast. When the winds do lay down, it will be summer time heat and time to hit the surf. eek

Re: Insane winds today - 04/23/22 03:09 PM

I drove through a sandstorm in NM on the way to CA years ago and had to pull over 3 times to clean the sand out of the air filter on my 64 Chevy truck to keep it running. I stopped and helped several people along the HWY do the same. I had to replace the windshield on that truck it was sandblasted so bad.

Guides on Fork in 1992 (I think) said that it blew 24/7 without ever getting under 20 mph for 45 straight days.

Hard on the fishing guide bidness.

Well i made it to Los Lunas, NM. I can attest that todays winds were just as bad as yesterday. The red skys driving thru W Texas reminded me the times it would rain mud in Wichita Falls from the dirt blown in from W Texas

Re: Insane winds today - 04/23/22 11:36 PM

I think it was June of 1995 that is was windy as all get out overnight for a couple of weeks or so. I was delivering newspapers to stores and racks back then. We had to put our papers together before we could deliver them and I had to figure out where the wind was blowing from...then find a car wash bay to park in to protect the papers from the wind. After several nights, I learned how to drive my stick shift Civic and slip the daily papers together at the same time.

This stretch seems worse. I wake up in the middle of the night and it's howling...go to work and have to deal with the wind...come home it's still blowing strong. Craziness.

Still does, we get just enough rain to make it look like the kids were shooting brown paintballs at your cars.

I drove by Monticello after my last appointment… decided I didn’t feel like fighting Mother Nature today. Tomorrow I’ll be fishing somewhere no matter what the wind does.
