I need help

I need help - 03/25/22 01:25 PM

Wife is in search of a new home computer.
I want something strong enough to run Turbo Tax application.
Something that will handle enough that I won’t come up feeling like I should have gotten more.

Ive had the same apple computer for 10 years now. I've never had a virus, and there is no need for me to upgrade.

Of course, Dafanman will be the most apt to get you into what you need, but Alienware by Dell is always a great option.

Any modern PC can handle Turbo Tax.

A system with an Intel i5, 16GB RAM, and 500 SSD is more than ample for a typical computer user that wants to do Office, check emails, and surf the web. This should get you down the road for 3-5 years.

Pretty much any computer will run TurboTax. If you are a gamer, video editor or photographer dealing with super high-resolution images, you would need a higher performance computer. For most day-to-day computing, any off the shelf computer will get the job done for many years. We usually buy from www.microcenter.com.

Alienware isn't what it used to be after Dell acquired them but my 2016 17 R3 is still humming along. I got it because 1) my coworker gave me a heck of a deal on it and 2) it has four M.2 slots and a second SATA HDD bay so I could store and run alot of VMs for my labs.

I'm looking to downsize and the Razer Blade 15 is very enticing. I think that along with the Dell XPS 13 will be a nice combo and will still be more portable than my AW 17.

We have a nine year old MAC. The wive tells me the new Turbo Tax will not run on it without some kind of upgrades. She can’t get it to load.

She's right. We had to get a new one last year to run turbo tax.

If you click the Apple icon in the top left, then click on About this Mac, is your version 10.12 or greater? You may have to do a couple of software updates. Make sure you have all your important files backed up before you start the update just in case it goes sideways.

All this black magic computer mumbo-jumbo is a mystery to me, but I can tell you from personal experience that dafanman knows his stuff and you can absolutely trust him.

Re: I need help - 03/29/22 02:36 PM

I bought this one from Walmart.com.

Laugh if you want, but the price was REALLY Good.

Here's the kicker ... it is a Reconditioned model. I know, I know, I took a big risk, but I'm retired and don't need it for anything more important than TFF.

Bought it on line, was delivered. Plugged it up and ran fine. Then it stopped, just like I had pulled out the plug.

Walmart consigns these from another computer rebuild company, and the packaging said in bold letters, "DO NOT RETURN TO WALMART> IF THERE IS ANY PROBLEM< CALL THIS NUMBER."

So I did, and talked to a very nice gentleman who wanted to do whatever it took to get me what I asked for. He tried a little diagnosis, then said, well you can send it back, OR send it back and we will send you another exact computer. So I said, "Well, I jus want what I paid for"

So the next process was a little out of the box, but they sent me a FedEX shipping label, I repackaged the computer and had to drive to out nearest FedEx to mail the package. As Soon as they read that the packge was back in FedEx hands, they started the shipment of another system to my home.

Here was the scariest part of the deal. I got notice of the delivery date and time, so I waited. Nothing, nothing, then I saw it. The frigging FedEx delivery guy had dumped it out on the street curb in front of my house. I don't even HAVE curbs here where I live, but just so you get to idea. $400 worth of Computer sitting out there under my rural mailbox, just waiting for some scum to slow down and pick it up.
But I beat them to it. Made connections, and it's been running like a top ever since. Saved something like $450 on the deal from brand new. Takes some huevos, but turned out good for me.

i was duped again.
the wife threw out we needed a new computer.
so here I am asking questions.
like a million times before.
when she makes these revelations she is way out in front with her plan.
I get back home sunday night and comment on how she better get going if she's going to get the taxes done.
Well, well, well.
fact is she had already purchased a new computer and the taxes are done.
not exactly sure what she got but it's supposedly the latest and greatest Mac.
guess i'm good for a few more years.

it's what she does...….
