Talk to me about work boots - 01/06/22 01:00 PM

Need a pair of safety work boots/shoes when I go visit customers on locations at their warehouses/distribution centers. The company reimbursed $150 so what is your recommendation in that price range? I have academy and boot barn close by.

Twisted X. Only boots that don't hurt my feet. I am 6' 1" 300 lbs so comfort is needed.

Get whatever you can get for $150. Not like you're gonna be in them all day every day on your feet.

There should be plenty available these days

5.11 boots. Love mine. Side zipper makes easy to put on/take off. Comfortable for all day.

I've got Timberlands and they're great. Wear these every day and they're goin on year 4. Had to replace the insoles from wear n tear but there rest of the boots have helped up nicely. At this rate there's no telling how long they'll last. Other brands have only lasted me 2-3 years before they wore out to the point of needing to be replaced.

Twisted X and Ariat are hands down the biggest sellers. Redwings are great too, but a bit more exensive.

Red Wings.

Probably won't be under $150 though. But I've reached the age where comfort is worth a few extra sheckles.

Also I'd recommend composite toes rather than steel toes. Slightly more flexible and forgiving.

not all shops allow those. ours doesn't and we also require metatarsal protection. they look like Frankenstein boots.

Those metatarsal boots are double sucky.

Ariat > Wolverine > Redwing

I've worn all three and they any of those will do the job but I prefer Ariat.

Redwing 1132.

Re: Talk to me about work boots - 01/06/22 03:34 PM

My last pair was Double H and I was pretty satisfied. I like that they make styles that have soles that look like traditional cowboy boots, ie has a heel. I also like my Ariats.

These days I care mostly about comfort. If they don't feel great off the bat they go back on the shelf. No more of the break-in nonsense for me. That goes for boots, shoes and flipping flips.

This^^^^

Huge selection of styles. They may cost a bit more but they last almost forever.

Re: Talk to me about work boots - 01/06/22 03:54 PM

Red Wings are best when it comes to really working in them. For just going to see customers a composite toe western style will be fine. I can tell you from experience that Ariat an Twisted X will not make it 90 days on a drilling rig, a good pair of Red Wings will go just over a year. We have a company come to each of our locations with a trailer full of boots once per year, and they have learned over the years what our guys will pick out. They bring very few Ariats and Twisted X these days, only the salesman and managers usually pick those out.

I have oilfield refinery and some other customers I have to suit up for. 95% of the time they ride around in their tote. I went cheap and bought a reel with the surplus.

Re: Talk to me about work boots - 01/06/22 04:14 PM

I have had a pair of Redwings for about 6 years now. I walk commercial construction sites probably 4/5 times a week in them. Some weeks they get more wear than others. They are comfortable, water resistant and durable.

Don't get steel toe or safety toe unless you absolutely must. They are significantly less comfortable.

Another vote for RedWings. One of the few boot mfr's that will re-sole your boots if the uppers are still intact. thumb

This^^ is how to be helpful!! Not “this brand” or “that brand”…but some advice (or “advise”, as some of you like to post) that will apply no matter what you get.

Thorogood and Danner are top notch, both companies have American made boots and fully rebuild them.

The first time the steel toe gets bent into your toe you wlll wish you never had them. This is from experience, corner of a large heavy package hit my big toe and bent the steel toe into my toe. Took 20 minutes to cut away the boot and bend the steel toe back out of my toe. Composite or heavy leather would have been better than steel.
