Just how fast have you gone (mph) in a street legal car on a public road?

The governor on Silverado thread made me think about a couple of incidents where I went crazy fast on public roads. A customer of mine in Lubbock is a car enthusiast and has souped up a BMW 335i I believe is the model. In 2019, we took it out on I-27 heading north to Amarillo. He cranked it up to 155mph. Truly felt like it was floating. Scary bigtime to me because I was not in control. He said that it would get close to 200 pretty easily. I said no. The fastest I've ever driven a car is 133mph on a stretch of highway (84) between Fort Sumner and Santa Rosa, NM. I had just got a new set of tires for my company car, 2007 Honda Accord 4-door V6. I cranked it up and there was no governor that I could find. She got to 133mph and was still climbing! I shut it down after it felt like I was on water instead of pavement. How 'bout you? How fast have you went?

140 in my Audi A4, only because of the Porsche that blew by me. I let him get about a 1/4 mile in front of me
and I paced him. It was about 10 p.m. and I started thinking about 4 legged animals jumping in front of me
so dropped it back to 85. Hwy 76 outside of Sterling

135 mph in my 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora when I was in Montana... no traffic up there at the time. It was nice.

140mph in Dodge Challenger back in early 70’s when LBJ freeway just opened

Bout 130 in BMW 740, I 20 west of Weatherford, I rarely drive over 90 now for safety reasons.

150 in a 5.0 Mustang on IH35 coming out of San Antonio. About 2 in the morning with no traffic.

120 give or take in a 74 Pontiac grand prix on the Cimarron turnpike between Tulsa and Stillwater.

175 in my GT500KR. I had just done some mods to it and was giving it a test run. There was plenty left to get if I had the nads to do it.

130 mph dark road max pucker. 1970 Charger R/T 472 stroker, 524 horse. There was still plenty of pedal left when backed off.

140 mph in a camaro.

147 according to the speedometer on my 1970 Plymouth Duster.. There was more there but things were getting a little funky..

Was clocked at 134 in a 45 on 123 bypass near Seguin in 1975. Allegedly.. They didn't get me that night but they got me the next day..

Rolled that car in 1976.. Don't know how many times.. It's hard to count when you're asleep..

Got another one in the barn at the ranch..

120 in my Gran Torino going downhill on I79 in WV. At the bottom of the hill I looked in rear view mirror and there was a county mountie right on my bumper. He passed me and I followed him at 55. He got to a weigh station and flashed his roof lights as he pulled in. I decided to chance it and did not follow him in. He pulled out and got beside me. His partner flashed double 5s at me and I flashed back OK. He took off down the highway. I had a buddy that was a county deputy and asked him what the deal was. He said they are not suppose to be on the interstate.

Car? 120ish. Motorcycle, 187 mph.

47 in a 60 zone this morning. In the left lane.

140 somewhere around walnut hill and royal lane in Dallas in a pimped out mustang . I was freaking out, me and the driver hadn’t slept in a couple days . It was crazy.

I did 130 in a Camero I bet on that same downhill stretch.

185 in a Audi R10 on the Autobahn coming out of Frankfurt. Felt like we were doing 85, that car was amazing.

120 in a couple different cars with me driving.
160ish in a not factory stock 73 Firebird a buddy was driving.

130's in a couple vehicles

110's on a motorcycle. That's entirely fast enough on two wheels

135 mph in a 1962 Corvette when the car was about one year old. It was on Highway 360 in the Trinity River bottoms Back then 360 was just a rural 2 lane highway with very light traffic. The car had more in it, but the front end felt as though it was about to flip the car. 1962 corvettes were not as aerodynamic as the newer models. Had to sell the car to pay for the birth of my first son. I still do not know that was a good trade off.

First thing I do when I buy a car is see what the too speed is. 79 Rx 7 has been the fastest, mid 120's. 2011 Prius C would only do 108. Everything else has been in-between those.

I think it was a 2016 Challenger 6.1L. 170-175. Kinda too uptight to look closely. Was an old friend's car. We used to build Mopars back in the 1970's. My bud died not long after that with esophageal cancer. He was a great guy ! 59 years old. Was a MOPAR freak !

120 in a 1956 Ford back in 1957....I wasn't driving and it really scared me because i had just survived a wreck where I was in a car doing over 90 mph and three of us were extremely lucky to have walked away from a demolished car....and this was back before we had seat belts/safety glass etc.....

My cousin had a '70 Charger 440 and it had 140 on the speedometer and we were way past that.

That was the only vehicle I have ever been in that you could see the gas gauge dropping on!

I drive the speed limit or the flow of traffic speed on public roads.
Now, on an abandoned airport runway, been at 150mph.

2001 mustang GT speedometer went to 140 and it was maxed going down I55 south in Jackson MS. I could feel the car “compress?” not sure if that’s the right term or not, but was bad arse for sure.

I ran my wife's BMW 535 up to 138 on I 35 north of Hillsboro. A ricer went by making too much noise, so I thought I'd show him what German engineering will do. He petered out about 120. Ran out about 1/2 a mile from before I let off. It was still pulling. Funny thing - wife was asleep in the chair beside me.

Bigrebar - that 111 mph pass on the water is more impressive than 150 on land. I've run a boat up to ~ 95, and you've seriously got to be up on the wheel. Things change way faster in a boat.

105 in my 2004 Triton pickup coming back from Ok City,...in a line of about 7-8 cars and we were flying...
being last in line I got the ticket from Hwy Patrol...

In a coworkers kit car his speedometer went up to 180 mph and i was dumb enough to ask if it would go that fast.

146 134 in a little ricer. I was racing the wife down 35 in Red Oak. She was in her Daytona Charger. We topped the hill side by side. I saw the back of a Tahoe in her lane and shut it down. She switched lanes and blew the doors off an Ellis County Deputy. I thought for sure she was going to jail, but he told her to slow the hell down and gave her a warning.

145 in a 440 RoadRunner.

186 in an Alfa Romeo Guilia quadrafilio a couple years ago.

130+ in our 1996 Honda Accord and it had plenty left. It had 140 MPH on the speed odometer.

Those are scary fast. We had one that was modded to no end. My legs were shaking, completely uncontrolable feeling in that car.

The new C8's might not be that fast, but they are on a rail under acceleration. I was so impressed.

It was 2 AM and I felt the car start to lift so I let off...would not have been good had I not let off the fun pedal.

145 in a 1996 Caprice.

I did 143 in mom's BMW on highway 6 between Navasota and College Station when I drove her car after the transmission went out on the 02 Duramax.

Sometime around the mid 90's (which is only important as I would never do this clown-a** sh** today), I last saw the speedo click by 160 in a ZR1 before I backed off the throttle. On I30, somewhere between Arlington and Dallas, in the middle of the night, with the headlights flipped off. I hit a seam in the concrete that caused the car to jump enough that I heard the tires chirp. At that speed it scared the bajeebas out of me and I lifted all the way out of it.

When I first started at PD we had several early to mid nineties caprices with the LS1 motors. These cars consistently ran 143 to 144. This was back when we chased everyone so we did that often. After that I never had another patrol car that would break 130.

150/160 (?? - speedo was maxed out at 140) in a 1976 4-door Mercury Grand Marquis Brougham (with a 460 c.i. original engine) in summer 1986 on a new stretch of straight and flat asphalt road west of Hooker, OK. That thing was floating and as smooth as could be.

I was riding with my buddy in a trans am cruising at 140ish. I made a comment about the speed and he dropped the hammer down. Even starting at 140, it pinned my head back. Went up over 160, but I never did see the exact speed.

I've got a Navigator that cruises very comfortably at 115. It starts feeling loose over 120.

My 1969 Corvette was the same way. Over 120 and the front end felt like it wasn't touching the ground

I think when I was sophomore in HS my mom bought new one of those VW bugs with the 1.8 turbo gas engine, her's had a 5 speed, speedo went to 160. One of my buddies and I jumped in it heading east to St. Jo to see what it'd do. Foot to the floor coming down one of those hills around Bonita I backed out of it somewhere between 145 and 150. We turned around and drove back to Nocona in silence, parked it in the driveway and never spoke a word about it again. We weren't prepared for it.

168 in a 2019 Vette Grand Sport and it had plenty more to go but I ran out of room.

2001 Z06 ~145mph on Westpark tollway. That was years ago. I can't remember the last time I cracked 85mph (that was on a 75mph speed limit interstate while passing someone). I've never been a speeder. I enjoy acceleration but have never really been one to drive fast. Too dangerous.

Had a 2011 LS3, heading into Shreveport one day, had a friend that was about 20 miles ahead of me and said he’s seen no cops, topped it out about 145 for several miles before settling back down around 110 till I caught him. Anything over 110 it’s get to sketchy.

Way back when, 146 as a passenger in my brothers 1968 Camaro. With me driving a 1973 Dodge Charger with a 400 Cu. In. with every thing tricked out you could sustain 135 MPH. Made it from Minden, La. to Marshall, Tx, a little bit over 70 miles in 45 minutes. Had to slow down quite a bit coming thru Shreveport or could have made it in less time. Back then I thought I was bullet proof and stupid.

Do motorcycles count. Owned a Hayabusa back in my younger and much dumber days.

+140 in my old bosses Porsche GT3 and it had a lot left. Even more impressive is how fast those cars can stop they have huge brakes and very soft and very expensive tires.

Did 100 in my mother in laws Porsche Cayenne about a month ago, I thought I was only doing 70ish until I looked down lol.

in 1974 , in my dads 1965 Sunbeam Tiger with a 260Cu V8 ---- I was 13 , my dad and I were coming home late around 11:30pm from a family dinner on a two lane expressway . A 1970 Boss 302 Mustang pulled along side of us --- the driver nodded at my dad , he nodded back . My dad says make sure your buckled up . Off we go , the Mustang was quicker off the line , but we caught up , the speedometer was maxed out at 140MPH --- we raced this guy for about 4 miles until a slight turn where my dad tried to pass him --- we spun out and luckily we didn't flip or hit anything .
We pull up to our house and my dad says " don't tell your mom I did that --ever "

130 or so in my 1957 Bel Air back in high school. Speedo was pegged past the 120 max reading and I had run out of gear. Basically driving a 450 hp floating hunk of steel. 110 on my Harley........that was stupid. 165 in a 2006 Corvette convertible with the top down because why not?????? Peg my Raptor out at the 107 limit on dirt ranch and county roads all the time. Would go faster if I would tune that out. What can I say....speed is fun!

140 + in a '72 Ford LTD on Highway 67 between Mt. Pleasant and Winfield .

148 on the Wurzburg-Stuttgart autobahn in my Dad’s Porsche 911S in 1975. When we shut it down, he said for me too gradually apply the brakes and not to stomp on them. My Ferrari does 211 but I sure don’t want to be in it when it’s doing that. It has the Enzo engine and crazy HP at 645

My Mazerati does 185. I lost my license and now I don't drive.

In the 80's. My wife was driving her uncles ferrari and got pulled over by cops on horse back. It was in a neighborhood.

Buddy of mine in college had a Trans Am with a 455. I am not sure what the top end was on it but he pegged a troopers radar once. His dad had money and covered his tickets. He washed that car at least twice a week and we would take it out afterwards and blow the water off it.

127 - Dal N tollway - 300 ZX. Chasing a Porsche 911. I got so far behind I lost sight of him.

165 MPH in my son's supercharged, stage 3, Roush Mustang. Software speed limits the vehicle. Felt firmily planted with the suspension Roush builds. By the way, the speed was GPS verified by an Escort Radar detector. Speedometers are usually not reliable or correctly calibrated.

I'd guess my old Trans Am from the 70's would peg out about 135 if I had to guess. It would run the spedo way past the 120 mark.

Around 140, in a 72 Pontiac LA Mans. Lead sled, took a while to get to that speed. If I remember right the speedo had 180 on it. Long time ago.

195mph on my 2008 Suzuki GSXR 1k. It had a LOT of work done on it to make it (theoretically) a 210 mph bike. I did the 195 on highway 20 between mesquite and DeSoto one night, coming back from a bike ride in.

That was the fastest I’ve ever been, with exception to aircraft.

Some of these “old car” number are complete BS folks. Simply not enough rpm/gear ratio in those old POS cars. Hell, I have a 56 Chevy with a supercharged LS3 and a 4L80E trans…with a Gear Vendor overdrive/under drive that is around 650 Hp and it can only get to around 150-ish. Numerous Camaros…one with a 427 that could only get to around 130’beforenit was floating the valves.

I had a friend with one of those 455 TA's back in the day and that sucker would straight up buckle the pavement. Fun car and I still think some of the coolest looking cars put on the road.

I am already planning my new fastest speed sometimes after the first of the year. My child plunked down a deposit on a 2022 Porsche GT3 that should be delivered in 6 months or so. We will see, but it is worth looking forward to.

BTW, couldn’t agree with Steez more. 150mph is rarified air in any car.

There is an 1975 SD455 T/A in Hickory Creek…about a block from the boat ramp in a garage. It’s been there since the mid 80’s. Black and gold, honeycomb wheels. Great lookin car. Every few years, I stop in and try to buy it.

I think the fastest speed I ever saw Ben ride was on his Ducati MotoGP bike at around 210 or so, but for a very short distance.

I went 105 in a 70s car because all 70s cars would do 105.
Going that fast to brag as a dumb youngster.
At 105 God gave me an attitude adjustment.
My front drivers tire blew out. I never lost control for a second.
Ripped my front fender to shreds with the tire.
Never did it again. Message recieved and understood God.

As a used car manager I had to test drive everything we were trading for soooo 130 plus in a Hellcat and I backed off with plenty of leg left. Guy that bought it totaled it the night he bought it.

The question was street legal car...not factory stock car.

Back in Nac. in the 70s, watched a dude in a z28 lift his front wheels off the the ground twice from a red light. Seems like home spun hot rods were a thing back then. Had a friend with a superbee 383 hypomag I think he called it. We were all in a train running around 110. He was in the back and passed all of us. We all got pulled over by a constable. My friend said he was running 136. No ticket. That was East Texas long time ago. About 10 yrs ago got in a five car haul down a long stretch running 90 plus. That was in an old bimmer. Had an old mg midget four banger that would run 110 no problem. Older now. I guess growing up in the 70s messed me up. I now have an old pick up and wife drives a bimmer 4 banger SUV. Sometimes I like to peg the floor with that thing . Probably outrun anything I ever had as a kid. 0 to 60 in 6 was cool back then. That's what my wife's daily driver does now lol.
