I've used the dishwasher, but it always misshapes them. I just let them get dirty

I find the dishwasher still messes with the shape. I clean them by hand with a wet towel and maybe a little soap if they are real bad.

Maybe we should revisit the Shampoo thread and then these hats might not need washing???

I like where you're going with this let's say you just wore the hat when he took a shower and shampooed the hat instead of your head I wonder how that would turn out

Re: Washing hats - 05/11/21 08:37 PM

The dishwasher works, but it is a huge overkill. Simply plunge it into a sink of soapy water and then rinse it off. If it is really soiled, rub in some dish soap into the nasty spots and plunge it again.

The longer you let it soak, the more your rim is going to break down and it will mess up the shape and fit.

If fishing on a hot day, dunk it into the lake and let it dry on your head. Two birds with one stone there. Cool head and clean hat.

I use this also. Works good and holds it's shape when drying.

Re: Washing hats - 05/11/21 09:02 PM

I've used the dishwasher, now I just soak them in a pot of scalding hot water, rinse, repeat a few times till the water is clean, then go set out on the outside condenser and let the fan dry it out, and keep that dome shape nice and tight and not wrinkly.

The lake is also another good one...

I fill a clean bucket with water, pour in some oxy clean, put hat in, stir em with a stick and let them soak, then take em out and rinse them good with the hose. Hang them up outside in the sun to dry.

Only way to wash a hat. Put it in the top rack of dishwasher. I let my neighbor borrow mine and he put it in the clothes washer. He said it did not work well. I assumed he knew to use in the dishwasher.

Re: Washing hats - 05/12/21 03:43 AM

I’ve tried most methods. Dishwasher for low profile instructed caps works fine. Trucker hat, not so well for keeping shape.

Re: Washing hats - 05/12/21 10:21 AM

First thing you should do when you get a new hat is spray it down with a water proofing spray. Give the sweat band a good soaking, until you see it dripping. Let it dry. This will keep the head band from soaking up your sweat and staining the hat. When and if you have to wash it use Dawn liquid soap and a stiff brush. Rinse it good and put it in a hat form like the one above and put the hat in the sun to dry. Use the water proofing spray again... Dan

Soaking in the sink or a bucket with detergent or woolite. Rinse well then hang to dry.

I could sit in your hat. That doesn’t mean you have a big brain though.

Re: Washing hats - 05/12/21 04:57 PM

Rules about caps.
You must never fish in a cap you bought. Must wear a gimmie cap.
Always store you caps top down, this keeps the luck from running out.
Each cap has a finite amount of luck. If you find yourself not catching enough fish, time to switch caps
Washing a cap removes any residual luck.

Your mileage may vary

OK... I've got lots of hats that I'll never wear.. usually buy two of every one I like so that I never have to wash.. Prize package to the one who posts a picture of the nastiest hat by tomorrow at noon central time.

Re: Washing hats - 05/12/21 06:52 PM

I wash hats every 2 months. Never use a dish washer. Not only will it keep your plates from smelling like hobo's taint but the soap is not designed to be lifting.

•Fill bath tub up with >6" hottest water you can get it to.
•Drop in a cup of laundry detergent while it's filling.
•Place hats, use some additional carpet cleaner spot spray on the really dirty boys. Let sit for an hr, then flip hats over.
•Use 5" long detail brush to brush away the sods that get lifted by the detergent under water.
•Rinse under faucet, then air dry.

Kid you not, it will shock you how many of your brown hats were once white.

Update, I screwed this all up. It was too confusing and I got out of the proper rotation and threw the hat away.
