Not for me! - 04/30/21 02:22 AM

I will admit this is the one thing I will never do. I can’t imagine riding these waves. Video is new and only 2.5 mins long

The one near the end that smacks the windshield is like watching a punch in the teeth in slow motion!

I remember that day on Texoma.

Re: Not for me! - 04/30/21 02:43 AM

Not many would want to do that but sometime you don't get a choice. I think all sailors end up in that sooner or later.

That didn't look pleasant, but they were probably fairly safe. That would be a whole lot worse in a smaller boat with a lower wheel house.

Re: Not for me! - 04/30/21 03:40 AM

not even if they paid big six figures would I do it . I learned a long time ago , the ocean is NOT for me .
I had an uncle that owned a 14 foot Boston Whaler . He used to commercially fish for salmon in the Pacific outside Santa Cruz as a part time weekend job( made tons of money ) .
First time I went out with him , we were about 10-12 miles offshore with 10 foot swells at 8-10 seconds apart --- being seasick would be an understatement --- never puked so hard in my life for 6-7 hours .
The stupid part , he didn't know how to swim , so he didn't carry life jackets at all , he felt like if he went in the water , he was dead anyway . I am certain my folks didn't know that part

My BIL told me about going thru a typhoon while off the coast of Viet Nam in a destroyer escort (1970) and they took water down the boiler stack in a big wave.

On YouTube, they are saying Keith on the Wizard (actually it was his brother Mouse), took a wave that destroyed the wheelhouse. Had to call the Coast Guard to tow them back to port.

Pa told of a time on a heavy cruiser in a typhoon during the Korean War when he had to climb the main mast to fix the radio antennae that was taken out after a big wave. Ship was rolling 45 degrees.
Rock and roll!

Reminds me of a few years back when I went deep sea fishing out of South Padre after a night of bad storms. Was a rough day, even the captain got sick barf We still caught a few, but I said never again!

I went on a cruise prior to Covid. It was as rough as I care to be in the ocean, 60 mph winds and the entire front deck was off limits. The waves we’re crashing over the front deck of a big cruise boat. I was sick darn near the entire trip,

Spent my early career working offshore on small research vessels in the 150’ to 300’ size class, rough seas suck as much as it looks like it does. I’m glad to to have people doing that for me now.

Back in 1977 we were coming back from Rota Spain on the U.S.S. El Paso after a 6 month Med cruise and had to travel thru a Hurricane that created waves like this. I worked in Combat Information center ( CIC ) right behind the bridge on the 06 level. I asked and got permission to go to the Bridge and watch some of these waves happening in real time. Just absolutely awesome but scary at times. We did have a Wave break on the bridge windows while I was up there. Some crazy stuff right there.

Looks like Tawakoni coming out of Wolf with 40 mph winds out of the North. Although I don't have a windshield wiper

Re: Not for me! - 04/30/21 10:19 PM

I went out ocean fishing once off the coast of Oregon....and that cured me of wanting to that again....and the waves weren't even remotely close to those. I stuck to buying the fresh catch off the boats that came into the harbor at Newport or Coos Bay.
