Garth and Dolly have sold as many records as most of the names named.

Re: Greatest c&w singer ever - 03/24/21 02:12 AM
I’d have to go with Mighty Merle. Gotta put Charlie Pride, No show George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams in behind him in no particular order. These new dudes don’t sing country and western even though I like some of them and their songs.

Jorge Direcho. (George Straight). Maybe a close second Merle Haggard. Willie or Waylon.
It's hard to name just one.
1. Eddy Arnold
2. Johnny Cash
3. Dolly Parton
4.Willy Nelson
5. Don Williams
I can agree with that but would like to add another George. GEORGE STRAIT!

I'd say George Jones but Conway Twitty is a close second.

Keith Whitley for me.

Re: Greatest c&w singer ever - 03/24/21 05:01 AM
I'd put Keith Whitley flawless voice, and Allen Jackson (my grandma used to talk about how Allen Jackson sounded like old country) in that argument.
G.Strait is no doubt top 3..Went to high school with his daughter and was good friends with the guy that was driving the car when she died. Sad deal.

Let's not forget Johnny Paycheck. How about Box Car Willie, does he count?
Ronnie Millsap. Seen Merle mentioned. Porter Wagner, now that is old school.
Here's a good one, Ray Price. Probably not the best but deserves a mention. Met him a few times while fishing Monticello with my BIL, come to find out Ray & my BIL were good friends. He had met Ray one weekend while fishing & then did some concrete work for him. They had lunch together every time he went to Monti. Never knew any of this until one day while filling up the boat this farmer looking fellow pulls up & asks "Where is Robert?" Who was in the store paying for fuel & food. When Rob come out of the store he introduced us, we all talked for a few minutes and left. Rob asks me "Did you know that was Ray Price?" I did not know, but was floored after he told me the story. That was time ago as I was just out of High School. 1982 ish. Good story thought I would shatre
Not only the best singer, but the best song of all time.
AMEN!!

I could give you a top 8 or 10 maybe but no way could I name just one or even 2 or 3.
Having said that George Jones would easily be at the top of that list as would the other George, Conway, Willie. Although I think men dominate country music as far as easy listening for me I must throw Patsy Cline in my top 8.
Also I love listening to Mickey Gilley's music probably because I was a dimestore cowboy in the Urban Cowboy age. Classics

Jim Reeves
All of those are greats - can't really name just one - even Tom T Hall was greatness in the "singing" that he did.
Love Ronnie Milsap and Reba, and really miss Don Williams and Charlie Daniels, but the oldies like Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold that were mentioned, plus newer ones like Carrie Underwood and Garth (more money than even my grandkids' grandkids' can spend) Brooks - I don't know.

I like the artists from the 1950's, and '60's. Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Hank Thompson, and Ernest Tubbs to mention a few. Every decade after that, seems like C&W music got progressively worse. The one stand-out exception would be Jeff Boomhauer.

It's true. If you listen to these modern "country" singers live nearly all of them wouldn't sound like their recordings. Too much autotune. And they don't even sound country to begin with, its all pop garbage pretending to be country. (For reference I am talking about these newer singers from the 2000s and beyond.)

Their is some truth in this
I like a lot of country artists from different years and sounds.
I saw Garth in Vegas a few years back he came out on the same age in a sweat shirt and a chair by himself and he sang country, rock, and soul
I know some love him and hate him but his song the dance is one of my favorite all time songs
Their are great artists from all decades in my opinion
