Giant Texas Bourbon - you have been warned!

Giant Texas Bourbon - you have been warned! - 03/09/21 12:52 AM

And I thought TX was bad. At least it was drinkable. This is not bourbon. I don't know what it is. Has a fruity...rotten fruit...smell and taste. Hands down the worst whiskey I've ever tried. I'll try it as a marinade, otherwise I'm pouring ithe $#!@ out.

Rant over. wink

The only Texas whiskeys I have found drinkworthy was Garrison Brothers or Balcones.

Garrison should be at $59. I was eyeing it earlier and couldn't pull the trigger. I haven't seen Balcones.

Curious, read where Garrison has a strong oak flavor. Is it similar to Makers 46?

Re: Giant Texas Bourbon - you have been warned! - 03/09/21 02:45 AM

The Garrison I had was the single barrel and was pretty oaky. Not sure how it compares to Makers. I had some Balcones Blue Corn whisky. Pretty unique flavor

You can really taste those oak staves in 46. I'd personally rank it higher but the nose isn't very good. The taste is different but pretty good imo.

No such thing as Texas Bourbon.

Just repeating what's on the bottle...but judging by taste....it's most certainly not bourbon.

Washing the taste out with Knob Creek...which is quite good.

Bourbon can be made anywhere to technically there is, that said if it's not from kentucky it's not worth drinking.

And let me say that I liken what's going on with bourbon to exactly what has gone on with craft beers. It's over the top popular so every idiot in the world wants to try and make money off it. There are just tons of undrinkable craft beers and bourbon is going the same way. Metallica should stick to music and leave bourbon to the bourbon people.

Not sure where the whisky madness ends. My liquor store whisky aisle looks like a Walmart aisle with dozens or maybe hundreds of brands no one has heard of or tried. At the price, it is impossible to buy and try too many or you end up with a collection at home your neighbors won’t even drink. I’ve gone back to a basic bar of Weller 12 yo. for sipping and Bulliet or Woodford Reserve for mixing. I spend my money on several good Irish whiskies and am done with chasing the perfect bottlle of American whisky.

Ironically, a lot of the distillers in Kentucky and Tennessee outsource their distillate from MGP in Indiana; then store the barrels to age in Kentucky/Tennessee

Including the following:
Angels Envy Rye
Belle Meade
Bulleit Rye
George Dickel Rye
High West (Wyoming)
Whistle Pig rye
Willet Rye

Re: Giant Texas Bourbon - you have been warned! - 03/09/21 02:34 PM

Because it gets so hot in Texas summers, the distillate gets pushed iin and out of the oak barrels to a much greater extent. This creates a more oaky product in a shorter amount of time. So many don’t prefer the combination of a young, oaky whisky—which is what you’ll get from most Texas whiskies.

Kentucky bourbon is all about the water used to make it.

They also have just about the ideal climate to age whisky in barrels. Hot enough so that it takes on some of the tannins from the barrel, but not so hot that you end up drinking liquid wood chips.

My wife (the war department) is a supplier to Garrison Brothers. We did their little tour and they go through great pains to explain that they are indeed the first and only legal Bourbon outside of wherever it has traditionally been made. I'm not a bourbon drinker, and that darn corn whiskey Garrison makes at over $100 bucks a bottle is harsh in my opinion and gives me instant heart burn.

I am Canadian whiskey drinker on ice, drink a 1.75 bottle a week on average.

If you want to splurge on some Canadian bourbon the Alberta Premium Cask Strength Bourbon and Rye get outstanding reviews.

I was pretty excited when my wife got me a reserve bottle for my birthday one year. I wouldn't pay for it personally-it wasn't very smooth.

I understand but technically location isnt a criteria. The process is, 51 percent corn, new white oak charred barrels, certain proof going in barrel, 4 years minimum age and a few more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Speaking of Texas Bourbon.... I’ve tried every Garrison except those not commonly available and even the $100 offerings are a far cry from the less expensive Kentucky competitors. The Balcones was slightly better but still not the same IMO.

I hate to proclaim our inferiority but Kentucky happens to kick some butt when it comes to Bourbon. I’d love to be proven wrong.

Update.... What he said. wink

With the exception of Sazerac which is made in New Orleans by Buffalo Trace???? I think all my other favorites are from Kentucky....Larceny, Woodford etc

I'm at the end of a bottle of Larceny at the house and have really enjoyed it. Especially for a reasonably priced bottle that you can buy anywhere

I personally like Texas Silver Star Whiskey. No, It's not Bourbon, but I think it's pretty good for a everyday type drink. It's about $35 a bottle, so not expensive but not dirt cheap. It's 40 proof, so your not going to get hammered quickly on it but that's not why I drink it. I like a drink in the evening while I'm sitting on the patio and grilling dinner and this fits the bill for me.

After dinner on the weekends, scotch and a cigar. Especially this weekend with the time changing!!! banana

Going to try a few scotches one of these days....maybe when I run out of marinade.

Single malts are the only way to go in my opinion. The cool thing about Scotch is you can really find what you truly like specifically for you. I personally like a hearty, smoky drink to go with a nice smooth cigar.

After a tough day or week, it's relaxing to sit on the deck at the lake or back patio at home and enjoy. I'm not even a regular smoker, but I do like this combination. The bad part is, my favorite scotch can only be bought over sea's and I can only get it two bottles at a time through customs. But there is a lot to play with at various liquor stores.
