Re: Elvis Presley - 02/18/21 09:39 PM

yes, in Memphis when I was a kid at the gates of Graceland my godfather was an executive for Price Waterhouse and had to stop there to get some docs. The Colonel and Elvis road a golf cart down to the gate.

I was 5 years old so I was clueless as to who or what EP was.

Yes. 1974 I believe. Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis. Went with my mom, stepdad, and sister. Spent the day at Libertyland then the concert that night. Stepdad was a truck driver and had bought me a “Peterbilt” cap earlier that day. I left it in the seat at the concert and was terribly upset.

My older sister was at his house when he died! They had just showed up at Graceland when the ambulance arrived, saw a body wheeled out on a gurney, and drive off with no sirens, and then heard on the news later he had died. She was like 13 years old and called home to tell us.

If you don't mind me asking, I'm assuming she was on the outside of the gate? If not, did she know him?

Had a chance to see him at West Texas Fair in Abilene in the early 70's, I was on the school bus waiting for all the other kids to get back from watching him.. I thought he was kinda gay back then. Never cared for his music. If I had another chance to see him now, I'd still be on the bus. bolt

Re: Elvis Presley - 02/19/21 05:01 AM

When Elvis died in 1977, there were 170 people world wide impersonating him. By the year 2000, there were 85,000 Elvis impersonators. At that rate, the number of Elvis impersonators will exceed the predicted world population in the year 2043.

Almost. We were in Memphis just after He died and cars near Graceland reached for miles on Elvis Presley Blvd. People in the street next to their cars weeping. It was a spectacle.

Re: Elvis Presley - 02/19/21 01:52 PM

There are some really good documentaries about him from his old original bodyguards ("Memphis Mafia").. At once he was probably the best entertainer in the world, but over time all the pills and the nightlife took it's toll on him. He was a character, no doubt.

We toured Graceland years ago. The most interesting thing to me were his guitars and handguns and his shooting range in his back yard. I want a shooting range in my back yard. roflmao

Saw him in 1974 and 1974 at Fort Worth Convention Center. To this day, no other show compares to the show he put on. My mom saw him 1 more time than I did. He pulled up beside her at a red light in Fort Worth and flirted with her in 1957. My mom was a beauty.

Born and live two miles from his birthplace. My dad went to school with him before they moved to Memphis. He used to visit the teachers at our grade school. The whole school would be in a buzz. He'd make his rounds to see them all.

Have always been a EP fan. Never got see him but I was 10 years old when he died. Watched his concerts and movies on TV. His voice is one of a kind and the music timeless.

Went to Graceland. His aunt was still alive and living there at the time.

The day he died I was cutting silage on a 40-20 John Deere. My dad had just bought a radio that mounted on the fender. One of those you could hear two miles away but could barely hear it on the tractor.
