Bauer and Cole played together at UCLA . My son competed against them at the college level . Cole threw harder than Bauer , but had less control of his off speed pitches . At the college level , when you throw upper nines all the time , that can get a lot of batters out , especially the bottom of the line up . One year , UCLA had three starters throwing upper nines and a closer that could touch a hundred ---crazy .
Cole's issue at the Pirates was the same , couldn't always count on controlling his hard breaking ball . When he tried to take a little off that pitch , major leaguers could see it and hit it .
Spin rate can be affected by how you hold the ball . The "pine tar " solution might help keep the ball on his fingers a split second longer , but would take time to get used too .
