I bet. I feel like they were overshadowed by Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, .38 Special, etc.

Re: Underrated bands - 11/29/20 03:05 PM

In general, the cream rises to the top, but there were bands whose popularity suffered from unattractiveness and/or a lack of personality

To get those exceptional sales numbers, you need to capture the teenage female market.

Some really good ones mentioned above, but if Leslie West was handsome, Mountain would have been huge.

I saw them live a few times back in the day. They were a really good band, but I didn’t particularly enjoy their live show. Not at all bagging on them or the talent.

They had three lead guitarists that played over each other...a lot of independent solos, not coordinated pieces like the Allman Brothers or Bob Wills (fiddles and such). It got be a bit much after about 20 - 30 minutes.

Judas Priest underrated? They got tons of air play and videos, sold out stadiums and world tours, I don't think they fit in this discussion

90% of Texas country music falls into this category. I have never understood why Cody Jinks isn't getting more airplay.

Brad Gillis of REO is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
His skills were fully utilized when he replaced Randy Rhodes for the 1982/1983 Ozzy Speak of the Devil/Diary of a Madman Tours

Legend has it that he learned all the Ozzy and Black Sabbath material in two days.
