Gun Barrel City.
They just voted down an effort to review an ad valorem tax (they have 0). They basically have no police, no fire, and no road improvement money. The locals say they have one officer at night and one fireman to go on alarms. Apparently Walmart, fast food joints, and Loews can’t collect enough sales tax to fund a city.

It ain’t even a town, it a place, it’s called Rayburn Country. I have a house in Country Club subdivision on a gravel road so far off the beaten path they have to pump sunshine back here.
4 miles to the boat ramp on Big Sam, 35 min from my deer lease. Hamburger Depot on 255 has about as good of hamburger as they get. The Mexican resturant has pretty decent carnitas, Chicken fried steak at the stump has to much garlic but it will do. The dollar store sells beer.
All you city boys can have Austin, I’m good where I’m at.

My first "police job" was in Hico many years ago after my tenure at Tarleton State. Always went to the annual Hico Super Six until it ended a few years back. Always enjoyed playing golf at a small nine hole course in Meridian the weekend of the Super Six and was fortunate to play Marvin Leonard's Starr Hollow in Tabor a few years back. That whole area is on the top of my list of favorite places in Texas.

Obviously having grown up around that area, I'm biased to it but you're exactly right. Even down around Forestburg and going a litte east of there is really nice. The area north of St Jo to the Red River to Lake Nocona is probably my favorite area in Texas.
Downtown Nocona, is something to see. If they could just find someone to buy the steakhouse and open something back up in it, I think that would have every building occupied.

This is a nice choice too
The Montage/St Jo/Nocona area is a very unique part of Texas.
Little hills, cliffs, valleys. Sort of like a mini hill country, but in north Texas with more rainfall and less heat in the summer.
If the Nocona Brewery and some of the wineries up there can survive the next five months, that would be a good start.
Now, I don’t want things to get too popular up there as I’d like to relocate to that area.

I love all / most East Texas towns. But for a change in scenery Alpine is in the mix.
