I don't live in Austin thank goodness.

The project will cost $7.1 billion, about 55% of which will be funded by a city tax rate increase. The plan calls for raising the operations and maintenance portion of the city’s tax rate by 8.75 cents, amounting to an increase of about 3.8% to the average Austin resident’s property tax bill.

This thing will probably be as useless as the Houston Toy Train System.

Austin is full of idiots!!! Why else would they own a power plant?

And the headline is misleading.. The only thing troubling about the plant was the payment Austin had to make every month.

WTH are you talking about? The headline that I posted is about project connect. Do you even take the minuscule amount of time to read? I love you like a brother but come on man! And your article post is from April of last year.

Heard on radio the city has to publish the tax increase, its close to 24% according to the dept. that figures it. Can't remember what it is, and that 7.1 billion is just a down payment. They are counting on help from the feds, even though there is no actual plans laid out. Plus that ding bat mayor still wants more businesses to shut down. What are they going to do when there isn't any businesses there to collect from?

Why would you sign a contract like that anyway?

And only reason they bought it is because the judge said they could back out.

Just adding to the facts of their stupidity.

Yeah, there's a biomass plant built and shutdown, reopened, sued for emissions, and all kinds of other operations problems about 5 miles from where I live. It's had multiple methane gas explosions and a fire in a storage silo that burned for months. Still making its compressed wood pellets though. The power generator was shut down 2 years ago due to inefficiency and other problems. Sounds like another potential City of Austin customer.

Pretty sure that $7.1 billion is just to get the project started. Untold billions will be required to actually complete it.

Moving 20 miles north 25 years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. Although enough pillow-suckers have finally moved to Williamson County to flip it blue for the presidential and sheriff races. Probably time to to start thinking about moving again.

I hear you. Company moved me here last year to work just south of Austin, so I moved to Wimberley. It's full of !@$^*&#$^%$ and overwhelming Blue. Unfreaking believable.

And the Project Connect is such a waste of tax payer money. My fear, is that sooner or later that taxing authority will want to expand its reach to neighboring cities and counties and become a Regional Taxing authority for the Metro Area of Austin. Not sure that is possible but seems probable.

The headline should make note that the power plant they bought is 225 miles away from the city! Its not like it is just right down the road. I would be livid if i were an Austin taxpayer.
