Question for billy van ward - 10/22/20 04:22 PM

I know you are a pellet grill aficionado, but if one were to be a stick burner fanboy, would you have any advice on wood? Bark or debarked? Type of wood? How long should said wood cure or season prior to being used in the smoker? TIA.

Soft woods only, like pine. Throw some cones in with it when doing beef. Skip the cones but soak the pine in doe urine for fish.

Get a couple chunks of Good Year tire rubber burning first in the fire box to lay down a good base. It'll keep the heat up between the loads of pine you'll be shoveling in.

Good thoughts on the pine. With or without creosote?

Great, sound advice.
When burning rubber, nothing can compare to the huge amount of black smoke.
Everyone knows the best meats are cooked with black smoke.

I'll occasionally use chunked up telephone pole pieces if that answers the question. The heavy, acrid, greasy smoke compliments the more full flavor cuts of meat nicely.

If you can't get your hands on creosote-treated pine, soak some styrofoam in gasoline. You get a napalm-like goo that ignites easily and burns quite evenly. Excellent with poultry.

I'm far from an expert on BBQ - I'm just a guy who started a bizarre ruckus when reviewing a little machine I really like. The local hyenas decided to hilariously jump all over me because their sociopolitical filters tragically color their whole world, it seems. It happens.

I used a plain ol' Brinkman water smoker for decades before I stumbled over what we now call the nuclear suitcase - that little pellet smoker.

Used nothing but mesquite, for I greatly prefer it. Bags of mesquite chunks from the store. A big chisel and hand sledge was handy for the absurdly large chunks. I don't care for the little chips, finding them too prone to ash out quickly and smother the coals. Biggest problem with wood for me was running out of room and heat in the fire pan before the chow was done, causing some inconvenience.

I know nothing of curing the wood. I have a pecan tree in the yard, but pecan ain't mesquite and that's that. I'd guess it merely has to reach a suitable level of dryness, then it's good to go.

For charcoal grilling, though, the only advice I can think of is to use a chimney instead of that nasty, infantile charcoal starter stuff (good for arson, I guess, but it has no place in cooking) and the real mexican mesquite chunk charcoal seems to work much better than the traditional briquettes, which I understand to be largely lumber mill by-products. Ordered a bag of the good stuff from Walmart and it looked like an East Texas woman over age 23 sat on it - pulverized. So, I get it at La Michoacana. Somehow, I was oblivious enough to live about a half century before learning that stuff even existed. Bummer.

4 pages, eh? I suspect my name in the title may be a factor in that. Oh dear, what have I done, LOL. I guess it's time to get to readin' and see who the most amusingly epic walking [censored] festival of the herd is. And away we go...............

Methinks "over" is the intended meaning.

Interesting phenomena, this contempt for words. Can any of you explain it rationally? Many things simply cannot be addressed in a Tweet-sized bundle. It is my goal to not waste a single syllable, and my success as a writer at least implies that I've been on to something all these years.

It's been my observation that people who dislike words and automatically call something that takes more than 15 seconds to read "rambling" just plain don't read books. Memes, Tweets, and brief message board posts with as many silly emojis as possible tax them plenty. Good luck with that.

I've even seen people write 3 sentences asking for help with a car problem and apologizes for the length of the brief post despite failing to even mention the make, model, or year of the car! Looking into sad little phone screens has truly hyper-weaponized stupidity.

Are you one of those ghetto mamas who calls pamphlets "books" and McDonald's Playland "the park?"

Wowzers. One truly never knows what turns a conversation on the interwebs will take.

That doe urine thing may well explain an especially unpleasant seafood meal I once had way down low in the Louisiana delta. I'd originally cited the potential bladder bandit that soiled my fish as a sewer rat or swamp donkey, but who knows?

Why does that upset you so? If my "job" keeps taking up so much space in your little head, I'm gonna have to start payin' ya rent!

I often do other internet stuff while trading, so I'm working right now. Looking at the trading software without diversion is headache-inducing and again, I only trade a couple days a week, at least as long as women, guitars, and fish still exist. That's one of many benefits of having a matrix of monitors - multitasking.

There's that pesky hatred of words thing again. I challenge you to find one post of mine that you can reduce to 50%, much less 5% and still convey the same information, windbag.

Strive to be EARNEST and ACCUATE, not a rancorous buffoon, in your communications. I promise you better results in more ways than you surely realize.

Counting? Nope. That's why Jebus invented spreadsheets, dipwad.

My housewife stealing days are long passed - happy and monogamous. The point of that bit of writing that apparently rattled you so was not the stealing itself, but the ATTITUDE that one can own a situation and succeed. Attitude is a huge - that's how I've gotten people backstage at concerts using security bracelets cut from the label of a bottle of water and pulled off one unlikely triumph after another. Be cool, be nice, and feel that you can own the world if need be.

It works. My results speak for themselves.

It is truly astonishing how obtuse and petty some of you are, and it's beyond doubt that such idiocy bleeds into areas of your lives much, MUCH more important than this. What a shame.

For some odd reason all this back and forth reminds me of this scene in O Brother Where Art Thou..
One of my favorite Movies which stems from one of my favorite reads of Homer's Odyssey.

Nope. My smugness is powered by the most advanced energy cell ever invented - my brain.

Hey BVW, would you please gift us with a sample of your tasty guitar work? Many music fans admired the EVH‘s guitar playing, but now that he’s no longer with us, there’s a job opening for guitar god. Since you shared a little about how innovative your playing is, you may be the one.

NOTE - In case your record company, or marketing team or band mates block you from posting your work - as backup, would you please just re-tell your entire history regarding the times you’ve seen Blue Oyster Cult in concert?

Challenge - Cut one of my posts by 50%, or even 5%, without cutting content.

**That’s about a 44% reduction. Would move to 40% reduction if the word “windbag” was deemed critical.

So, even the BOC post wadded your thong the wrong way, eh?

Wow.

I hate to be this unkind, but is there a woman in your life who has witnessed this sort of behavior from you? Does she actually let you touch her after seeing such petty, sissified conduct? If so, one must assume she's a dependent torso like in Boxing Helena or something.

Perhaps my view is just slanted, 'cuz my old lady wouldn't let anyone touch her unless he's extremely impressive in intellectual and emotional balance. Rest assured she was very happy to cross paths with me, LOL.

A bit of history. My grandmother was a loony hoarder and compulsive mail shopper. She joined that record and tape club thing not really knowing what she was doing. The first thing they sent, year 1980, was VH Women and Children First, a truly spectacular album. That album, plus getting shot by a scuzzwad criminal-wielded 7mm magnum rifle at the ripe old age of 12, changed my life forever and turned me from a very good jock/QB into an even better rock and roll freak.

Best thing that ever happened to me. Even as I write this, the injury, aggravated yet again at the ramp yesterday, hurts like bloody hell, but I wouldn't change it for the world. For the record, I've been disabled since age 12, but have never drawn a penny from it. Despite being a total oxycontin case, the last prescription I've filled was during the Reagan administration and two years after the injury and the bad news that I'd never walk well again, if at all, I beat the pants off future NBA All-Star and #1 biggest contract holder Larry Johnson at one-on-one. Devoted rehab can work wonders.

In all fairness, though, that prescription was filled during Reagan's SECOND term, though. laugh The last time I even took OTC meds was a good 5 years ago.

So, as you may imagine, the EVH thing was very significant to me. Was just launching the boat into Leafy Branch at Fork from a friend's ramp when I got the text. I think the bad news actually shut down the bite. Smart fish.

Two skills are of utmost importance to me. One is to be a great bass angler. The other is to be a great musician, composer, arranger, and engineer like, say Steven Wilson, the smartest man alive.

After over 40 years of experience, I've managed neither. I'm merely adequate-to-low-end advanced at both. I've given lessons to kids who blew my doors off after 5 months even though I got my first guitar in 1980. I should be SUPERB; alas, it hasn't happened. Same with bass fishing - I'm proficient, but when I look at how great anglers perform, it's clear I'm a rank amateur.

Still, I'm much like Steven Wilson, really....just with a lobotomy and two smashed hands. Some things I'm utterly brilliant at. Other things, not so much. With other things still, I'm an incompetent clod. So goes life. If I'm great at something, I'll freely express it. If I suck, I'll do the same. That's the only way to live.

These are significant, disheartening failures to me, yet I'm having a blast doing both, and that's what really matters.

Perhaps I'll break through those walls at some point, but I've so many hobbies (deep sky astrophotography is the latest one) and pursue so much fun in the world that it's hard to become elite at any one thing other than the things I was seemingly born elite at - writing, reading, talking, listening, driving steerable machines, and pleasing female minds and bodies.

How tragic it is that our life spans are so devilishly short to hinder mastery of everything.

There are much, much better things to which to listen than my work, I'm sad to say. But, all I have to do is look to my left at a long den wall holding one of the largest Paul Reed Smith guitar collections in the world and it all feels nice again.

There. Feel better, buttercup? Am I wess fweatening to you now?

I'll close with a relevant photo of a good friend of mine having dinner on my still-pristine shirt from the VH 1980 Invasion Tour, an event that forever changed my life. Over 500 shows later, the monster rolls on - getting better and better. Well, it was before the world came to an end.

Fair enough, but you sure are moved by your disbelief.

It's sad that people think succeeding is so improbable, especially for someone as brilliant, resourceful, and driven as I. My investing methods are so painfully easy that any dimwit with at least $25K to play with (you have to keep minimum $25K in your brokerage account to pattern day trade) can EASILY succeed. Cleaning the pellet grill after a lamb rib rampage is much more challenging. My close friends are ALL doing the same kind of investing now. The ones who didn't have the dough, I loaned it to 'em with the stipulation that I get my money back plus 3 super tacos from Taco Casa as interest, when they are up and running nicely.

Regarding my second point, you have proved it.

Not remotely accurate. Every syllable I write, or real close to it is worth something. Some windbag from a message board ain't gonna be able to change that, and yes, the "windbag" is critical.

Are you in disbelief because:

1) You feel I'm too deficient to succeed in investing, or
2) You feel that it's impossible or very difficult to successfully day trade.

One, the other, or a mix of the two must be the right answer.

Discuss.

There's a slight problem with your premise, though, Slick - you're not backing up your positions at all. You're just pointing and wailing "YOU BAD!"

I'm backing up my positions in detail and there have been zero solid rebuttals. Perhaps your method of debate works with the slugs with whom you associate, but those of us who have actually voluntarily read an entire book in the last ten years find it lacking.

You did poorly (still convey the same information). Regarding my OP, here's why:

1) The picture is readily available.
2) Much information is left out from the OP that many consider helpful and actually elicited inquiries for *GASP* more information! That alone speaks VOLUMES.
3) If there anything wrong with indicating I liked it so much I've been giving them to friends?
4) Is there anything wrong with indicating how much it's been used? Lots of good stuff goes teats-up far too soon, sometimes a week after the warranty peters out. Do you also feel the number of hours on an outboard is useless info, or is merely acknowledging its existence, your favoring of it, and throwing in a pic plenty fine???
5) Is there anything wrong with indicating how much food it holds? Might people care about such a thing.
6) Is suggesting a dish most don't even realize exists also somehow wrong? Seriously, those lamb ribs make people geek out.
7) Is indicating how much money it can save people who like BBQ and buy it prepared wrong?
8) Is advising how cheap and easy to obtain the pellets are bad?
9) Is a suggestion on how to make the already-mighty ribeye beef steak even better bad?
10) Is explaining how nicely portable it is also bad?
11) Is mentioning how it's so wickedly killer that it booted my beloved 4x4 from the favorite machine throne, a truly impressive feat, also to be scorned?

Kindly enlighten me.

The correct answer is both 1 and 2. 2018 was not a very good year for the market while 2019 was excellent. Send a pic of your December brokerage statements for both years showing how you outperformed an appropriate benchmark. Should be easy enough for you to mask the personal info.

1) A sharp 10 year old could match my achievements, so long as he has the dough to play.
2) How the market is doing in a given month is wholly irrelevant to my system - that's the beauty of it. How it does across minutes and days is much more relevant to me. Even while AAC, UAL, NCLH, and CCL were tanking, I made a lot of money playing the pattern. Even the daily return from lunch is very predictable.
3) I can't say I'm deathly inclined to bother with editing and posting my statements here, and forging them would be a snap, especially for someone who has Adobe Pro or experience writing code like I do. I could make myself appear a trillionaire and I fear I'd be wasting my time for, no matter what I offer, it seems likely you'd just spit in my face again.
4) I started day trading about 15 months ago, so 12/2018 is not applicable.
5) I'll see what I can do, tho. Kindly give me a couple minutes. I like helping people, even those who are unkind to me, throw off the cruel yoke of employment and insecurity.

This is a good example of what I do, culled from a sort of training email I sent a friend. It was a good week, but not from my best. One day's results:

[Linked Image]

This is a shot of the spreadsheet I keep track of the transactions on.

[Linked Image]

Here's a shot of the sort of graph I use to day trade. It is CRITICAL to success - real time with each minute graphed as it concludes. Without that, properly configured, my work would be much more challenging.

Hey, jagoff, I have NEVER slum lorded and have made that clear. You are, without cause, insulting a tremendous amount of effort by me and my Dad, one of the most fundamentally decent men I've ever known. Shove it, and cease immediately. I'll be happy to interact with you in good faith, but if ya wanna be a tool, feel free to kiss my butt.

Our properties were the nicest in the neighborhood and I still get facebook messages from tenants and employees thanking us for providing the best possible conditions for mostly hard working people who deserved it. It was the neighboring places and things like the Jamaican Crack Posse that made things tough.

We left the rental prop biz about 14 years ago. I've been investing in stocks for about 4 years, using several methods, all successful. In between that, we went thought the gates of hell thanks to a careless driver senselessly mangling my girlfriend.

Yes, there is. When a family spends 30 years busting their humps trying to do the right thing and some CheezRichard shows up and grossly mischaracterizes it for no reason other than to be a jerk, touchiness applies. Compare that to the touchiness shown by those on this board over things much, much, much, much, much less significant. I got SHOT looking out for our tenants, and I ran the places while taking 18 credit hours a semester at a very difficult university and being disabled by severe childhood injury. We got pushed to the very limit.

There are two critical aspects of my system that I didn't mention:
1) The stock must be with a company large enough to not hiccup and mess up the pattern when you buy, say, 50K worth. Not all remotely qualify.
2) The bid-ask spread is of great importance, for one doesn't want to have to come out of the gate down by more than a penny or so a share. The less ground you have to make up, the more you profit, obviously.

Why do you care what I was doing immediately prior to 15 months ago?

So, is that all you have to say? It's interesting how you people fling so much vitriol, but when presented with a solid rebuttal, even when YOU REQUESTED IT, silence prevails and you either vanish or ignore the rebuttal and move on to the next poke in the eye. Some of the people here are really cool, but many are among the most idiotic creatures of any species I've ever encountered.

Ya want my tax returns, too? I promise to release 'em.......

Vitriol, in this case, is hyperbole. I haven’t seen anything out of line or even remotely in the realm of vitriol directed at you. You’ve done your best to bring the jokes and criticism on yourself, and then resorted to name calling and playing victim.

Like I said the other night: this place is fun. You should join in.

NOTE - In case your record company, or marketing team or band mates block you from posting your work - as backup, would you please just re-tell your entire history regarding the times you’ve seen Blue Oyster Cult in concert?

Anyone who uses the term "sample size" is, at least in part, OK in my book. Well done! I expressed the same concerns.

Unfortunately, despite running all over that great city, I could only find one bum!

The QT by the White Rock spillway beat a week in Toronto just yesterday as THREE bums interfered with the simple act of pumping fuel.

Damn straight I am, and they know it. These cretinous yokels are the epitome of weak. I actually feel a little bad giving them such a hard time, like one might when slaughtering a toddler at basketball or something.

I assure you their flaws revealed here bleed into much more important parts of their lives.

Keeps going? It's just getting started, brother.

Tight lines!

Hey! I can call them yokels, even slack jawed inbred yokels, but it’s unacceptable that you would feel as if you were allowed to. Back it up a bit.

No president with an approval rating under 48% has ever achieved a second term. Agent Orange is closer to 40%. Only one Republican candidate has won the popular vote in the last TWENTY-NINE POINT NINE YEARS. I'm not remotely silly, arrogant, or ignorant enough to claim to know who will win the next election, but Comrade Combover certainly has his work cut out for him.

Furthermore, even the prospect of an obese septuagenarian who loves McD's and insists exercise is bad for you living until election day, much less for 4 more years, is a bit on the dicey side.

See ya next week.

Wait and see. Trump is going to WIN by a LAND SLIDE! flag

Side Note: If you Lib's would have picked a better candidate other than "CORRUPT" Joe Biden and his running mate who was the first to drop out of the Democratic primary because the Democrat's hated her, the Dems might have had a slight chance of winning. Americans see how corrupt Biden is. Just ask HUNTER !
